Would it be possible for someone with access to both accounts, post a comparison of latency results (locally and internationally) between an IS and a SAIX account.

e.g. local/international game servers, local/international news websites

From previous experience, an IS account had far higher latency when used for online gaming.

If this has already been discussed/compared, a link to the thread would be great!

Thanks.

:)

use the search function... Yes this has been discussed, IS = higher latencey but at a constant level/rate (All unshaped on their sat connection, VOIP good with abit of a delay). SAIX = lower latence on unshaped ports, higher latency on shaped ports and erratic latancy times due to shaping (Voip not usable). However the SAIX unshaped accounts will be the best hands down for latency on all ports, but it is expensive.

I decided to stick to WA for this month because of MS Remote Desktop. Can anyone on an OpenWeb account tell me how usable Remote Desktop to a US server is?

Thanks Scooby_Doo.

Yes I know PostmanPot, but I want an updated set of results.

I've also stuck with Web Africa, but I am reluctant to switch to an IS account for the 30Gb of local traffic (yay), if the latency for gaming isn't great.

local latency will be fine, international won't. AFAIK, IS actually has the fastest local, as they have about 70% of the local content.

ummm... maybe, the problem with that is if u have to log in to a international server i will not help because even IS hardcaps international rendering local trafic usless for that game. how ever if u don't that ok. Also during the day the peering link between IS and SAIX is very congested so low latency games will be a B!tch during the day. ie unplayable. however at night should be fine.

Could someone with an IS account please ping games.arena77.co.za for me?

Edit: Hmm, it's not responding to pings for me, how about kalahari.mweb.co.za

Uhm on irc it says the arena77 servers are down...

tinuva@subaru$ ping kalahari.mweb.co.za
PING kalahari.mweb.co.za (196.2.33.21): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 196.2.33.21: icmp_seq=0 ttl=119 time=22.501 ms
64 bytes from 196.2.33.21: icmp_seq=1 ttl=119 time=21.875 ms
64 bytes from 196.2.33.21: icmp_seq=2 ttl=119 time=26.165 ms
64 bytes from 196.2.33.21: icmp_seq=3 ttl=119 time=20.461 ms
^C
--- kalahari.mweb.co.za ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 20.461/22.750/26.165/2.105 ms

And that is bad how?

What will be bad, is pings to SGS servers from 9am-4pm, or anything to SAIX for that matter, but the same goes for SAIX to IS...

i dont understand

someone said IS has the fastest local but then they say you have to login via international

now i might be wrong but once youve logged and you start playing the game surely thats local?

tinuva ping saix for me please

Like with BF2 u have to login to an international server before u can play games local or other wise. so if international is not working then u will not be able to use games like BF2, even if u still got plenty of local bandwidth. But if u don't need to login to an international server to play multiplayer local games then its fine u can play np.

but they fixed that so it does work takes a while though

but the pings are as good as saix?

and lets say i surf local for a week and use 3 gigs surfing and downloading local content

how does IS know you havent used international?

It doesn't the first 3 gigs are used on local and international... once the first 3 gigs of traffic (local + international) the next 27 gigs is local only with zero international bandwidth.

first 3 gig from wherever in the planet counts towards cap. thereafter rest of 30gig is available only local, no international access.

Hmm, I Have tested both a SAIX based and IS based account, on weekends I playd local games and /ping telkomsa.net and to be honest, there is not much diffrence
