Latest Steam news

Can u find the supposed release of steam for mac - can't find anything and wednesday is nearly over

It's here now :) Portal is a free download and Torchlight half price :D I already have most the other releases though...

I downloaded Steam. When I then launch it, it has a window saying "Updating Steam" and a progress bar for a 33mb download. It keeps dying when it gets to 28mb...
Very annoying bug

Yes, I had the same. Kept restarting until it finally downloaded the whole update. Took about 15 tries....

They launched Counter Strike Source today.

If you have CSS on windows copy all the .cfg files in your steamapps folder over to the mac steamapps folder as this will save you a schitload of time & bandwidth ;)

Just been playing CSS now and the gfx rendering in OpenGL is much better than DirectX. This rocks, now I can get rid of windows.

So far it's not picking up all the local servers though, filed a ticket with steam..

ponder, you running a hackintosh?

Portal runs fine now, but HL2 is pretty much unplayable on my mac. Haven't updated TF2 or CS:S yet. Getting snow leopard this week to see if it helps.

Get Snow Leopard or check for HL2 updates. Half Life 2 is actually less demanding than Portal, graphically!

ponder is running a hackintosh, so am I!

I would hackintosh as well but not sure if a Asus P5Q is supported, I have a macbook but that's got intel graphics so not good for gaming...

P5Q is supported, works perfectly. Hackintosh is great, takes some work but ultimately worth it, in my opinion.

Well I don't quite understand what you're saying, but it can definitely be fully functional under retail Snow Leopard.

Well there are a lot, and the whole scene is very confusing. One of the simplest and best is the MyHack installer, in my opinion.
1. Format an 8gb Flash disk to HFS+ format, with Disk utility (on a Mac)
2. Restore a Snow Leopard install disk image to the 8gb Flash disk (also with Disk Utility)
3. Run MyHack installer - and install it to the flash disk.

Then you have a bootable flash disk which you just use to install OS X.

Of course that's just the basics, you will have to read the insanelymac forum for more details, and get your hands dirty. Kinda like Linux!
