Lawnmower Choice

Also give a thumbs up to Tandem, bought it at GP Lawnmowers in HoneyPoo....had mine 13 odd years to mow a pretty big area and have even used it out on a bike trail to mow a relatively smooth 1.5km section of track that ran through a field (quicker than farting about with the weedeater). Cut down one side and then the other side on the way back!

Chassis is a bit rough now and dinged up here and there (went with aluminium) but the engine is solid (think its still a Honda engine on mine).Only ever replaced blades every couple of years and changed the oil once a year and an occasional spark plug.
A few years back I took off the wheels. prised off the grease seals on the wheel bearings and packed in some new grease.

But the one I bought was about R3500 back then and its now closer to R8k to replace...
Crazy how much its gone up.

As for Ryobi, Ive had a R1000 cheap ass petrol weedeater for years that also took a hammering in the yard, behind the house in the veld and out on the bike trail. No issues. Only replaced it last year with another cheap Ryobi as the head unit fell had stripped out.

If you like to fiddle with things, keep an eye on things. constant services etc. Buy a Petrol lawn mower. They are nice for not needing a cord to look out for.
If you want to have almost no maintenance, reliability and just mow the lawn get an electric.

Rolux or Wolf. Only plastic parts on a lawnmower should be the bin and the engine cover. And that should be no problem as you not going to leave you electric mover on the sun or rain.
Also try to get one that is at least 2000w
My Rolux is 20 years old and except for changing the blade a few times, nothing else was required. It just works,

As for the switches giving problems. That might happen on electric mowers, but they are cheap normally and easy to replace yourself. You can even just put a normal light switch on it for on and off. But then it does not have the safety of cutting off when you release the switch/handle.
Thanks, you right best to go for electrical no time to fiddle around.
Will check out Rolux as well. Rolux one that you have sounds solid what is the exact product details if they make them any similar that be great. I saw you mentioned which parts should only be plastic so i attached a picture of a wolf lawn mower i seen at builders however this Pic is from website not sure if can see the details but when I saw it in person I recall the connections to the wheel being plastic which put me off but maybe I was wrong it is steel. At least the switches are not to bad as Ive seen many private grass cutters battle with that and loose wiring on the extension cords.

Thanks. Thats pretty solid durability over long period of time and some maintenance but not a lot I see, noted. Yeah prices crazy these days.

Eish my Rolux is 20 years old have no idea what model. They not even the same color anymore. Mine is still grey/charcoal color, see the new ones are orange. But mine was definitely over 2000watts. I don't think they make many different models. See only a 2200watt model, so probably same size as mine.
Having a strong motor(more watts) is very important for a lawnmower. When grass is longer and thicker the motor can struggle and overheat and die. So the stronger the motor the less chance of that. Especially if your gardener operates it or someone with little technical understanding how a motor works.
As for plastic parts, yes the switch is also plastic. As long as the body, wheel attachments and handle is metal you OK. Wheels itself is also normally plastic.
When I was a kid we had a Wolf and we had a 2500 square meter garden. That thing just worked for 20 years and them my sister took it when they got their first house. Never asked, maybe they still using it.
But you never know, things are not made the same quality today as years before.
But Wolf and Rolux always had a good name.
