Are there any laws that prevent you from taking video or photos of anything in particular?

Please do state as many as possible...

First thing I can think of asking is if there is an accident for example. Not a highway obviously, but a urban road. Yesterday there was an accident on Durban Road around 8:30PM. Now there were at least 20 people standing by the side of the road near the accident scene.

Are you allowed to get out of your car approach the scene and photograph or video anything in the area. Whats is legal about that?

I presume there is some common sense that you should not be doing that, but then again that could infringe on up and coming local bloggers that may feel like being you-tube journalists for the day?

Whats your take? What else is a do or dont?

I know that airports, any military buildings, VIP residents are off limits. For everything else, snap away!!

I'm a journalist, so I should no. Anything that involves national security is off limits like military bases and such. Cops might arrest u on the side of the road coz they'll say ur an obstruction but u can ge around that by being co-operative.

As a journalist you should :p

I am also a journalist and photojournalist so i should also know:)

Yip you can photograph anything you one except something of national security which includes the Military and sometimes powerstations, airports and water works - but those arent major. As Brixton said, dont get in the way of the Police as that is illegal and can/will get you locked up. GO ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

Oh dont forget, there is a difference between photographing legally and breaking copyrights.

I assume it's not civilian airports because I snapped away at Changi and Dubai Int'l without issues. The only places where photography is forbidden I guess would be where a sign exists - eg at military base, border crossing, etc.

It stands to reason that different countries have different laws. The OP specifically mentioned Durban - not Changi nor Dubai.

I took a picture of the new international terminal at JHB International, with my tripod. Take that, security!

EDIT - to clarify:

I've taken pics at Cape Town Int'l too - does that count? However, if there is no sign forbidding photography, you can take any pictures you want.

Here's a crop of that image:

It was 5 seconds, btw.

Here one at around the same time, shorter shutter:

ACSA and the airport police there tend to get a bit shirty at CTI as some tourists have found in the past. I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Yeah, when I landed at Cape Town the last time, the plane topped at the far south end of the terminal building, and as I got to the building's entrance, I turned around and took a picture of the aircraft. I hadn't even lowered the camera when the security guard stuck her greasy palm right in my lens. It was the day after I got my 24-105L - I was not amused...

Just remembered I took this shot not long ago.

I have a stack of photo's taken at Denal Aviation on my cell phone.... Though I am to sh... scared to post them in case I lose my clearance. Some of them are pretty decent of the old Rooivalk building before it was changed into the SAAB construction area.. but have some of that as well.

Pretty much though, Its images I know I can never show anyone, other than close friends
