So telkom just laid some fibre in front of my home last week.

How long will it take to light up. Which ISP do I contact or is it cheaper to go straight to telkom ?

Welcome to telkom where a 1 week project turns into a 4 month wait. I would highly advise against going with telkom (they are known for being a horrible ISP)

2003 called and wanted their statement back.

Nothing wrong with Telkom as an ISP nowadays. In actual fact they usually have a higher FUP than most other providers too.

There is nothing wrong with Telkom when it works. But if you have a problem, getting it sorted out within the next millennia seems to be impossible. I spent over a year trying to get my ADSL line sorted before finally moving to fiber and getting away from Telkom's horrible support.

To answer the OP, unfortunately, there is no way to tell how long Telkom will take. But I would expect it to be 2-3 months if things go well. I say this because there are numerous posts on this forum where Telkom have layed fiber then just stopped working on that area for several months. If you are unlucky, it could be 6 months or more.

You mean OpenServe laid some fibre?

You go look on the http://www.openserve.co.za/open/fibre/ website till you see your area is purple instead of pink.

Then you contact your ISP of choice that does OpenServe accounts (I want with Afrihost) and they contact OpenServe. Then eventually an OpenServe tech will contact you and then will come and lay the fibre into your home. The OpenServe tech will install a 4 switch router but that is locked down, only LAN port one works and you connect that to the WAN port of your router. You send the fibre number the tech gives you to your ISP and the ISP sends you the credentials (though you might initially be able to use your ADSL credentials).

I already had a fibre capable router, so I don't know how the rest works, if your ISP will give you one free or if you have to buy one from them or elsewhere.

Odd. Last time my line went off, it took Telkom exactly one day to fix the issue. I logged the ticket on a Sunday as well.

Telkom distributed letters in our area in June 2016, saying that Hawaii would be installing fibre. Activation was estimated to be August, 2 to 3 months later. Ha ha

In December, they eventually pulled an overhead feed to the pole at the back of our house, but left a long length of fibre coiled up at the bottom of the pole.

Late January 2017, they mounted a distribution/connection box on the pole and terminated the fibre on the pole. The man who did this said that the service would go live in February, but did not specify which year.

Mid-March and their coverage map STILL shows that fibre is "coming soon" ...

This is in Murrayfield Ext 1 in Pretoria.

But, like many people, I didn't have a line down problem, I had a congested overloaded exchange where I had pings approaching 2000ms to the US and throughput of around 5-8 kb/s. Just to be clear, the same throughput was observed when using 2 different ISP accounts (Web Africa with IS backhaul and Afrihost on MTN Business backhaul) and this issue only happened during peak times. Telkom did nothing but to turn around and say the line was working within the contracted parameters.
