I am in the market for the above mentioned. Now I must first state I am not prepared to spend more than R3500. All I want is a HD ready for Full HD LCD TV with a USB media player that will play all formats of DIVX movies.

I am not into BIGGER is BETTER, I want a 80cm LCD that I can watch some DIVX movies, play Xbox 360 & soon plug my HDPVR in (to be purchased soon)

Brand name is not important
I want a good warranty from the supplier

Any suggestions will be helpful just remember I am in Cape Town (The City of GODS) :p so suppliers in the area would be good.

Thanks guys and gals

P.S. GAME and MAKRO has some specials so if you have any feedback on what the have at the moment it would be appreciated

The Samsung LA32D550 would work or the LA32C550 if you do not mind buying the previous range.

Series 5 LCD is quite a bit more than R3,500.

Get a Series 3 LCD, should be about R3,000, and then get a HD media player like the WD TV Live for R800 (better than built-in USB media players).

If you do consider changing your mind on the budget slightly, I think Game has a special on the 32" Series 5 for R3999 atm.

Good price. I must test the USB media player on my one, but I think a WD Live would be better.

I have a 5 series, and from my experience with the media player ...

- std rips, Xvid encoded .avi in 620x250 to 650x350 res range play perfectly
- 720p rips, h264 encoded .mkv/.mp4 at 1280x720 mostly play very well
- anything higher, h.264/avc encoded .mkv up to full 1920x1080p are hit & miss, but in general the media player struggles with the high bit rate (e.g. atrifacting & stuttering)

Full 1080p rips are in the 7-12GB per movie range, so unless one has access to heaps of bw, 1080p wouldn't really matter to most.

For a while there I thought no one is going to respond :D on my request. I know that R3500 is not a huge budget but for my needs a 80cm is more than enough. I find it so strange that people spend in excess of R10000 just for a TV. Not to mention the outlandish amounts of money being spent on mobile phones. I am at heart a tech toy junkie but the escalating cost of these devices really puts me off. How does one justify spending more than R3000 on a mobile phone?

Thanks guys I was looking at the Samsung range and yes my budget has a little "fat" in it to extend to R3999 I am just not prepared to dish out thousands like some people. I would prefer the built in media player to reduce the clutter the HDPVR and Xbox 360 is going to take up enough space on the yet to purchase TV stand :p

You clearly haven't owned an iPhone. :p

Actually I did and after 8 months of being strapped to a pc whenever I want to add something to my phone or take off I swooped it for an Blackberry. Now I am looking at the Andriod revolution for an new phone once again not prepared to spend a fortune.

I guess as one gets older it becomes less important to have the latest flashy thing :p
