Hey all, I want to buy my little one a leapfrog leappad 2. It looks good, although the apps are expensive. My daughter is almost 4 now, and very clever with phones, and my pc. So I want to get her something that can keep her busy, and maybe help with learning, etc etc.

What I want to know, is can I play video files on it too? Maybe for long trips, converting a dvd to video and play it through the leapfrog? I dont know this things, so thats for the stupid question.

Do you guys think its a good thing, or maybe something else?

A friend of mine bought one, and while they are really cool for the little ones, like you said the apps are quite expensive. Depending on how careful she is, I would rather look at an inexpensive tablet and get a solid case and screen protector for it. Most games on the Android app store are 10-20 bucks and you have a HUGE variety.

It depends on how much you want to spend and if you want 3g or wifi. The Samsung galaxy tab 2 7" wifi has been on special a few times already for about R1500 from loot and Takealot's daily deal. (Normal price 2800) may be worth keeping an eye out for that. Its a damn fine tablet for that price. Dual core, good screen resolution etc.

I have a google nexus 7. Those are about R2500, (quad core, 8 hour battery life, crystal clear screen and can run every game I've thrown at it) but of course that will be overkill for a 4 year old. For the stuff she would use it for you will be able to get something a lot cheaper. Perhaps you can ask others for some recommendations here. Here's a thread I came across to get you started.

Oh by the way, if you go for a tablet, just make sure it supports google play store. Not all the lesser known brands do.
Also keep an eye out on amazon. They have a free app every day. I've picked up some awesome games there for my boets 4 year old.

Dr Panda games can keep them busy for hours- its like a virtual dollhouse with 1000 different items you can interact with.

Okay perfect, will definitely go for that tablet then, for R1500 it makes more sense anyway, but R2500 is quite steep for a 3 year old, I wont be using it much too.

I see loot is selling a prestigio dual core for R1249

Dual-Core
1024x600
1GB Ram
4GB HDD + SD Slot
4 000 mAh Battery.

I don't know much about these, but that's not a bad price for what you're getting. May be worth googling this
