Could someone who perhaps recently had to go through the process give me some tips or advice? Need to book for my son to go take the test soon. Best time to try and get booking?

Do you pay on the day of booking, pay before the booking etc? Good places to take in the east rand for test (Benoni is not great from what I remember)
 
Ask the driving school to make the booking they somehow get spaces faster. Don’t roll backwards and don’t bump the cones

Have you gone through the process ? I’m told that you need to pay for test before hand and come and right on another day. Apparently you do the eye test on the same day as the payment and not on the test day
 
Book online, pay before the date mentioned in the email confirmation. You can have the eye test done on the day you write or take one from your optometrist with you.
 
Sorry I think you do the eye test when you go pay. If you don’t take your own. If your medical aid pays rather do it that way to skip the queue.

For drivers yes, and not somehow, the answer is $$

Learners bookings are usually really easy to get with lots of slots open.

Yep, you have to make sure you pay the booking before the day of the test. My ex wife was responsible for booking our son's test, booked it in October for end November, didn't pay online as the system was down, rocked up to test center on the booking day and they told her sorry, booking wasn't paid so he can't write the test. Luckily they got another slot for the following week and paid upfront and he could write his test the next week.

So yeah, if you can't pay online for whatever reason, make sure you go to test center before the booking day and pay. I think on the booking confirmation, it also gives you a deadline for when the test must be paid. She unfortunately never saw that part. So just a heads up.

Also just make sure you take copies of ID of parents, original ID of child and proof of address.
