Hi folks!

I have a friend who wants to get involved in web design. Seeing I'm the only guy in the industry that he knows, he's asking my advice (I frankly don't know where to tell him to start). Basically, he wants to jump into the deep end of front-end design. He pretty much wants to learn as much as he can about HTML, CSS and Java as he can in 4-6 months. Any suggestions? Does anybody know of some in-depth online courses? Cost isn't too big a deal for him...

Thanks in advance!

Is it really adequate? I mean, will he be able to go out and get some clients (and do decent work!)
I'm not suggesting it's all that's needed - it's just a good place to start right now without spending money. Just feels like so many people like the idea of something and speak about doing it, rather than using what's available to get started. Not saying your friend is like that...just suggesting they get started :).

Tell him to try Lynda.com, it's around $35 per month or around R550pm

You get full access to the site for any course, first try the trial and then decide.

Does anyone know of a single course that is thorough enough for him to do and basically learn the whole thing inside and out? Or will he likely have to do several?
Does anyone have experience with the nanodegrees of Udacity? They're expensive, but they seem thorough...

Stop looking for a magic bullet; becoming a skilled developer takes time & effort
Everything one needs is readily available online.

What's wrong with a magic bullet? ;)
I know from experience that there's really no "one perfect way." I learnt everything I know from a million different resources (over a period of 8 years! He's trying to learn as much as possible in a few months).
I just wanted to find out whether there's a better way than what I did it....

You just provided a reason... "I learnt everything..."
No course can make a good programmer & course time constraints will always entail compromises. If a person is committed to becoming a programmer then a good book always imparts far more; key aspect here is commitment, without it even a "magic bullet" is useless.

Well said

They could be 70% done with one of those free suggestions by now .

FYI github is a pretty good place to start.

So too the international universities: https://github.com/prakhar1989/awesome-courses
...and if you have iTunes, check out iTunesU (iTunes University)... and of course let's not forget youtube.

Ps. All this could have been found quite easily with a Google search; if you don't know how to enhance your results, then you probably haven't seen this:

Yep, he did... Thing is, there's nothing like hearing from someone who has done a course and can vouch for it's quality.
