So I'm on a three month probation at my new job, I'm on my second month and I've come to realize that I may not be a good fit for the company. I know they are short staffed, however, and don't mind working the next month, but I'm not keen to become part of permanent staff. Any advice?

I'm also aware of needing to pay money back to the company for training, would that still be applicable on the grounds of me not being a good fit for the company due to mental health reasons?

Contact HR, tell them you wish to end the probation period. I don't think the company can hold you responsible for costs during the probation period. That is why it is there. For either party to end the employ at any time for any valid reason.

The offer and contract that you signed will have these details specified. Usually the only difference to a probation period and not, is the length of the notice period. Sometimes it is half.

I think it's a weeks notice in the probation period, it's there for these exact reasons.

Correct, weeks notice under for probation and two weeks for under a year.

your notice period for both probation and permanent employment will be in the contract you signed with the company.. generally for training, you will sign a form stating that your training costs in rands equates to x amount of days or months or years having to work for the company to consider it being paid back and if you leave before that period expires, you need to pay them back whatever remaining costs are..
