Leaving OpenWeb due to an account dispute regarding them wanting me to pay a month for an account that was not yet active.

Please note I'm not dissing their service - their accounts are great never had a problem - just taking a stand on principle here- forcing people to pay for services not yet rendered is pathetic.

So what is my next best option?

Mweb - The Usage policy/warning letter/ bans worry me - I am not a HEAVY downloader but I've seen lotsa complaints.

I'm guess AXXESS and Afrihost are still playing up.

So basically Telkom/Plugg - any additional suggestions?

I recommend Telkom. I made the move from Openweb Gold account and I honestly find Telkom Uncapped better. Plus it's a lot cheaper now.

How long have you been using it and how much data do you move? I've heard terrible things about their throttling policies.

Don't bypass their shaping rules and you won't have an issue.

This is assuming you're going for their traditional uncapped account and not their new el cheapo grande throttle ones.

Kalster did you not read the post...... anyway I'm also worried re: warning letters, I occassionally visit TPB for this and that

I am with MWEB, can tell you I am doing anywhere between 100 to 200gb on a 4Mbps uncapped account. Never received a warning or ban or anything. The people who receive them are running download 24/7 and bypass the shaping rules.

Swallow your pride and pay that month, it's going to save your sanity in the long run.

I signed up and paid for Openweb even though I couldn't used them, too (ADSL line wasn't even installed, I grabbed a special)

I'm suprised - always thought OpenWeb were the top dog re quality these days- well looking forward to testing it

What did you end up going with?

Just want to point out to the users in this thread who recommended Telkom and actually said it's better than Openweb that the Telkom Uncapped feedback thread does NOT indicate that it is better than OW. :p

strange... i signed up on Wednesday - filled out in my bank details (debit order), few hours later got my username and password. They actually have not debited me yet. Assume it'll be on their next billing cycle.

Yeh, let's compare months of unstable openweb to one bad week with Telkom after over a full year of line speed 24/7. Forum mentality

Wrong. Their abuse policy works purely on exceeding a daily limit set by them that is not disclosed.
I got banned, and never bypassed their shaping.

Months of unstable Openweb? Really? Have you been following the Openweb thread since about June/July? Things have never been better with Openweb.

Ironically, the only time I had a bad experience on Openweb in the past year is when they offered me a SAIX account to test out. P2P was dead day and night.

xrapidx, Everybody has some kind of speed issues every now and again - no service or product is ever "perfect".
(except for the pet rock)

.....But I'm willing to bet that OpenWeb has much more lenient AUP rules than MWeb, Telkom, Afrihost and all the rest.

If your ISP doesn't allow 256-bit SSL encryption, because they think you want to bypass their shaping, well, then you have a dud ISP my friend.
No SSL = Useless in my books.

Then there are other things like Free WIFI you get, and completely unshaped during weekends.
(even during the week now sometimes it seems, like this past wednesday)

People usually post complaints on the forum, not compliments really. such is life.
Bigger companies might even get MORE complaints than the smaller companies (because they have more users) - does that mean they have more issues percentage wise?

Don't focus too much on complaints, focus on the Company and their product, their service, and what they offer you.

Just responding to his claim of problem free service.

Until this week there were no restrictions on Telkom uncapped, the feedback thread has been virtually dead

I wanted to leave Openweb. They require a month's notice, which is fine. On 3 January I asked (pleaded) if they won't please consider still cancelling the service at the end of Jan, as it is only 3 days into January, and they were very stoic in their reply when they simply said 'no. You must give a full month's notice as per service agreement'. No other explanantion or any 'unfortunately's'.

Whilst they are correct, I find it a bit hardcore that they are that insistent. After this, I am not going back to them (even though the uncapped service and speeds was good).

Plus I found their technical support to be a bit condescending...I was not being a dumbass in any of my queries.
