Hi everyone,

I bought a Sony LED 3D TV a while ago. The 3D option never bothered me but it is starting to bug me now. I have got no clue how it works. Anyone mind sharing some information? How does 3D work? Can any programme be viewed in 3D or do you need 3D movies and if movies do you need blueray etc.?

You need: 3D capable input (from 3D Bluray) into the TV, then the 3D glasses to view.

Don't quote me on any of this :p But from what I've seen of my friends 3D TV, he can enable it on programmes but it's like a poor emulated 3D (Not sure how it achieves this 1). You then get a stereoscopic option where it uses side by side images (either vertical or horizontal) so like this for instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxh2fw1dXe0

The 1 side of the video is taken at a slightly offset angle, when you enable stereoscopic on your tv, it'll "merge" these into a single video and output each side of the image to the glasses and then the glasses will turn off and on very quickly to feed your eyes the relevant information.

So to answer your question, you don't technically need a blu ray player. You can for instance download that youtube clip I sent earlier and play that on your tv and enable stereoscopic mode.

Thanks for the replies. 3D seems to be a bit of a waste at the moment. Maybe next year :)

NewTown, when you got your TV, did you get the 3D receiver with it? Unfortuntaly it's a seperate item with Sony tv's.
Assuming you do, currently the only supported media is Bluray and gaming (unless you live in the US or UK).

On to how it works, google will really be your friend here, but effectively whether 3D works in general depends on your tv set. I know most Sammy's have a 2D to 3D conversion that tries to add 'depth' to your picture. That's ALL it will do when it comes to standard tv viewing. If you have a 3D Bluray, you would then need to activate 3D on your tv (find the right mode), slip on your glasses and generally enjoy the show :)

There are a LOT of nay sayers when it comes to 3D. Unfortunately you need to accept that. It comes down to personal choice. If you want it, get it.... if not, don't hate on those that do. 3D is not going away.... I am DEFINITELY going to be getting myself a 3D set in the near future!

Let me know if I can help any more.

The problem is that there is so much information out there that I have no idea what I need. It seems to be dependant on the make of the TV. I never asked when I got the tv. I will check with the place I bought the tv from, maybe its not that complicated... :wtf:

Hehehe, it's generally fairly straight forward bud. What is the Actual problem you have??

Some 3D TVs can convert general viewing to 3D,this is make and model dependant, others can only receive 3D signals from HDMI 3D capable devices like Blu-ray. And then some models have Powered/non-powered glasses to actually view the 3D image

It's not entirely a set standard so pretty much free-for-all
