LED lighting for house

LED showroom

Is there an LED lighting showroom somewhere in the Joburg area?

Hello Arthur,

there is no showrooom that I know of. But how about your own house being a showroom for a couple of hours?

Contact me on [email protected] and I will bring my lights to your house to show you what they look like in familiar surroundings.

Thanks

if i understand the first para correctly, WE ARE GOING TO GET ESKOM OUT OF THE RED!!!!!!!

how about cutting down your electricity account by changing your lights to LED lights,
and in the process giving eskom less money per month?

LED lights SAVE MORE ENERGY than "energy saving" bulbs.

How long does a single led light belb have to burn to absorb th install outlay cost ? what is the break even time ? 5 Yrs ?

You could probably calculate that depending upon the specs of the actual bulb and how you use it. Remember incandescents need to be replaced often as well as consuming lots of energy so the total cost of ownership is very high.

I think around 5-7 years could be a good rough estimate for LED in terms of return of investment. Take into account the fact that the LED can last up to 20 years under proper usage, you will see a big benefit in the long run. Like with all renewable and efficient energy solutions they pay for themselves in the long run. Remember that LED will come down at some point in the future, not too soon though but it will happen.

Hi all

I replaced all my downlighters (63 of them) with LED. Bought it from a place in Cape Town - mentioned in this thread. It cost me around R60 each for the multi LED in warm white. Initially it shines very brightly - but the LEDs do not keep its intensity. Within a month it reduced to about 60% of the originasl intensity. I complained with the manufacturer (who claimed 50 000hrs) and it was all replaced - again with wonderful intensity - but fading over time. I am dissapointed.

Those are very cheap LEDs. Perhaps inferior quality from the get-go?

I'm also thinking of replacing all the light fittings in my house with LEDs to try to reduce power consumption. Another reason I'm doing it is because the house currently has these ancient ugly looking light fittings and I think downlighters would look much better.

First question, do these LED lights give off a light that is WHITE in colour? I want pure white light, not yellow or anything.

Secondly, how much does it cost to have a pro come out and physically replace/rewire/test all the stuff?

Third, I know abut c2r.co.za but are they really the best? I want a wide range to choose from, any other suggestions?

Thanks

I can answer your first 2 questions (and add my 2c about the third):

The LEDs I have seen have been quite a cool white - they are much less yellow than a normal incandescent light bulb.

You don't have down lighters already? If not you'll probably need an electrician to come and fit them in the ceiling. Might be pricey. Another option might just be more modern light fittings (which you can fit yourself) with LED bulbs.

I have used c2r and was very happy with the service. Price wise, I'm honestly not sure about prices from other LED sellers.

Break even time

How long does a single led light belb have to burn to absorb th install outlay cost ? what is the break even time ? 5 Yrs ?

Hi gregg,

the break even time depends on a few things:
1 the amount of hours per day the lights burn (the longer the light burns the shorter it make the payback time).

2 the difference between the wattage of the old or current light and the led's wattage that you use to replace them.

3 the rand per KW hour that eskom charges you ( the higher the rate, the shorter the payback period becomes).

4 the price difference between the old and new lights.

a few examples:
burning a 6W LED downlighter 24 hours per day you will get payback within 10 months having changed from a 50W.

using a 40W tube 1.5m (5ft) burning 24 hours per day your payback will only happen in 4 years time having changed from a 58W fluorescent tube. but having a 80 000 hour lifespan will only be change again in 2018, if you change them in 2009. and they can work with or without the starter and ballast.

feel free to email me (with cell no) and if you are in the jhb/pta area i will demo the lights to you at your convenience and place.

[email protected]

please people, before anybody spends money on lights, have a look at what c2r has to offer. all it will cost you is not even your rand per KW rate and maybe a cuppa tea :-)
nothing else.

have a look at the links above, there is a LED light for every place/application that exists.

a tip for renovations. when you change light fittings try to use screw-in fittings. when wired correctly the live is in the centre and the sides are the neutral. as opposed to a bayonet fitting where you can put the bulb in the "wrong" way round even if the wiring is correct.

monty.

technically

why do you have to post the same info in like all the Eskom threads

Edit: You posted the same info in 13 threads????

speaking, its not the same info.
only the link to the iol website is the same.
not one post is the same, if you look at the blue box wherein the total complete message sits.

LED Lights - Saving of Time and Maintenance Costs

Great thread and so cool to see that LED Lights were actually picking up in popularity here in South Africa back in 2004. One of the things many South Africans are starting to calculate as part of the expense of running a business is time. When you install LED Lights, whether they be LED Downlights or LED Tubes etc, the fact that they last over 50,000 operational hours is fantastic as it reduces the expense of replacement (not to mention a huge reduction in your electrical bills because they are just so damn energy efficient), but the use of LED Lights basically eliminates maintenance costs. If you are running a large office with thousands of bulbs, tubes and downlights burning a good 8-12 hours a day, there is a price to maintaining these lights on a regular basis and replacing them constantly. With LED Lighting, you'd be looking at replacements once every 10 years... Food for thought especially for businesses looking to save money on a number of fronts. Anyone still looking for LED Lights?
