Hi all

I am looking at getting a 3D TV, I have been reading up but what I just cannot understand is why LED is so much higher in price to Plasma. I know Plasma is "old" technology but there are many saying to rather go for Plasma when it comes to buying 3D TV's.

I am looking at this Plasma: http://www.dionwired.co.za/audio-vi...0-inch-full-high-definition-3d-plasma-tv.html

I know that LED's only go up to 55" and you do get some that are about the same price as the 60" Plasma but what is the difference really?

Why is there such a huge difference between these two?

I am just trying to get some clarification, so any advice and feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have the 51 inch version of that plasma and am very happy with it.

You have to decide what works best for you, there is no one size fits all.

That particular model has quite a reflective screen so if you are putting it somewhere where there is allot of sunlight you might want to look into the newer model or an LCD LED display.
Plasmas also tend to be less bright than LCD screens but once again this is only an issue if there is allot of sunlight in the room.

Plasmas do tend to be better picture quality at that size and price range though.

Maybe explain what you are after and what your budget is then you might get a better response otherwise it will just be a mudsling like the apple vs samsung posts.

The difference in my experience is due to the more advanced digital signal processing hw/sw they put into LEDs. Granted much of it is there to compensate for the deficiencies of LCD panels, but ultimately the end result is smoother/more regular motion vs mid range plasma TVs e.g. Samsung's 5 series models.

Whether its worth the price difference depends on how particular you are on seeing smooth motion irrespective of the quality of content you're viewing.

I have both, a Panasonic 50" plasma and a Samsung series 8, also 50".

The Samsung is streets ahead of the Panasonic, both in clarity, depth of image (I'm talking about 2D), smooth motion, contrast and functions. The add-ons for the Samsung (web TV, apps, motion control, voice control) are a bit gimmicky but the touch-pad remote is wonderful to use. I set it up with 2 programs, one for day-time viewing and one for night.

Largely because the manufacturers are milking you by supplying a cheaper (and lighter (shipping)) tech, adding gimmicky marketing and creating a false sense of what's better, and then charging you more based on it. The problem is exacerbated by laymen judging TVs on brightly lit demo floors from close viewing distances, and LCD wins here due to its brightness. It becomes a test of brightness instead of picture quality.

Series 6 LCD may have better horizontal-panning motion handling than Series 5 plasma, but this is with motion enhancements (higher Hz and CMR) enabled which can add a fake look to the picture which many do not like. The plasma will win in picture quality under the correct (dim) viewing conditions though.

Compare higher series and we find that plasma is still superior while being cheaper, e.g. look at the top Samsung TVs here - http://www.televisioninfo.com/d/reviews/Samsung.htm.

So the clear choice is plasma based on value for money. LCD's only benefit is overly bright rooms and slightly less power consumption (R10-R20 p/m for average viewing perhaps).

With Motion Plus set to Clear (least aggressive preset mode) I couldn't discern any degradation of cinematic content on my midrange LED vs plasma.

Not what I found comparing my mid-range Samsung sets side-by-side, they were very equal in dim conditions ... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...sions-thread?p=8958687&viewfull=1#post8958687

Thanks for all the replies.

My lounge is quite light during the day which might be a problem with reflection. Is reflection really a huge issue or is it just something you will notice if you really look for it?

My budget is whatever it takes to get a good experience, I don’t want to spend R20k and then not be happy, if I have to spend R32k and be happy every time I watch TV that is fine.
I enjoy watching high quality movies, I would rather get a movie on Blu-ray than watch it on Boxoffice, if that explains it.
I also love watching sport, must be 90% of what I use my TV for, so I want the best HD sports experience.

I am not worried about weight, not like I will be walking around with it and the extra power consumption is also not an issue. One thing I have found is that my current LCD (Sony Bravia 40” FHD) gets quite hot, will the Plasma give off a lot more heat than what an LCD or LED would?

Then I would say a high CMR (Hz) LED would be more suited to your watching patterns.

The motion quality on DSTV HD (sport) can vary quite greatly. Most is optimized for 1080i50 so will be pretty smooth even on 50Hz TVs, but some is not so great. This is where the high-speed signal processing engines in LEDs compensate to make low/irregular frame rate content motion also look smooth & natural.

Its really noticeable in dark scenes, when I'm watching movies with dark scenes or playing PlayStation during the day I have to close all the curtains otherwise its enough to be annoying.
I'm happy doing that though so it doesn't bother me and sports and other regular tv is perfect all the time.

They do get quite hot but I'm not sure why that would be a problem.

My recommendation is if you are prepared to close the curtains when watching movies then you wont be disappointed in the plasma.
If you don't want to live with that then buy a more expensive LED, don't get a budget LED because your sports will most likely not look good and annoy you as well(make sure it has a good refresh rate).
