Hey myBB,

Help me out with kitchen LED's. Wife's renovating and I'd like to get some of these fitted.

A few things to get clarity on:
1. Are you just buying the regular Sonoff (or other brand) strips and cutting them (if required)
2. How are they powered? Plugged into a regular wall socked, or wired into the light swittch.
3. Cabling, did you chase this into the wall etc?
4. Was it worth it?

1) Yes
2) depends on what you buy.. most common is a 12v based power supply with varying increase in power it produces, depending on the length (amount of LEDs) of the strip..
3) mine is powered with a regular wall socket.. I would recommend having the wall socket placed where it would be hidden in one of your wall cupboards.. this makes it easier and cleaner for the install, since you can't wire 12v into your light switches..
4) yes, we can have light in our kitchen later at night when we don't need the main lights on and adds an additional element or feature to the kitchen.. also helps light up the counter area..

I got a nice looking metal strip with defused cover that i glued onto the board over the kitchen windows that i put the 12v LED strip in)

Hidden on top i have a 12v LiPO battery plugged into battery charger and then a 220v relay that opens the 12v from battery to LED strip when power fails - installed primarily for load-shedding but the LED strip is so bright we use it all the time. (also have a normal switch bypassing relay to switch on strip manually)

My experience:

1 - Bought inexpensive LED strips and they are all in the bin.

2 - Then bought the flat LED downlights from Gelmar, connected to a 12V battery and charger. Came in handy during load shedding and now use them at my holiday home now.

3 - I then went back to traditional tube light design for my kitchen at home, and these have worked the best for me as you can chain them. They have 4000K colour temp LED and are really bright, what we wanted.

I added under cabinet LED strips to a new kitchen about 8/9 years ago.

Bought stuff here: https://leds4life.co.za/product-category/alu-extrusions/

I had the cabinets made with a recess / cutouts at the back. Bought the aluminum profile with a plastic diffuser that clips in.

I had 220V light points behind the cabinets, and just added a 12V power supply (on top of cabinet)

Look at Glo Lighting.

I got a 20m Spazio COB warm white strip and you can cut them to the lengths you want. With connectors, alluminium profiles, power supplies, etc.

Warm white COB strips ftmfw.

You obviously don't have a wife or know how they operate, 99% of the decisions are made by her, and I'm going to use my 1% to sneak in some smart LED's . She's not doing any of the building/installation work, just drawing where she wants stuff and other people do the work. I'm just here to pay the bills.

I had one rule when renovating, do whatever the fsck you want in the rest of the house, but the TV room is my domain...

100% this, my wife is also a qualified designer who is very artistic, while I am an engineer who while I can be creative have the artistic skills of those that designed the Tesla Cyber Truck.

P.S. Also, my wife has a firearm, so 'Yes dear, whatever you want dear, right away dear!'

be careful of some under counter lights, some are motion activated... which can be irritating as they're on and off every 5min. Rather just get LED ones of a nice single colour or colours you can select and then with a set on and off.

Ain't nothin' wrong with the Cybertruck design :D
