I'm going to get a screen to plug into my PC via HDMI soon. I'll be using it for gaming, general web browsing and YT and watching full HD movies and SD series and TV.

I'm struggling to decide between LCD/LED and plasma.

The LEDs have 120hz and clear motion tech, which makes the content appear strange, with everything overdefined almost. Like a soap opera.

Plasmas can suffer from image retention and reflect light like a b*tch.

Any input will be appreciated.

I do believe that for what you are wanting to do LCD will be the best option.

If your budget is relatively low, then LCD is your option since the native resolution on the panel will be better.

Retention really isn't a problem.

Also just buy one with a matte filter and it doesn't reflect.

Also bear in mind that 120hz generally looks odd for TV and console use because it has to add frames to a 60hz source to make it work, while on the PC you could pass a genuine 120hz to it.

I chose plasma because there's always a "stutter" of sorts on LCD, but I don't use mine on a PC screen.

For PC use and depending how far you mean to sit from it, it becomes a bit more of a tricky choice.

What's your budget and what size are you looking for? Decent Plasmas are generally rather expensive and at a lower budget you'll get better TV's in the LED ranges.

Many a hotly debated thread on the subject lurks around here. Maybe search and uncover.....

Wat?

The native resolution will be exactly the same. 1080P is 1080P doesn't matter which technology you use.

Go and research the R6k plasma screens, the native res on the panel is USUALLY 1024x768... (or it was up until sort of midway through last year when I was last checking). They do dithering, downscaling, etc etc to display the 1080p picture.

They can't be branded full HD then.

Agreed, but I've seen it done by all the big brands before.

Its an argument PP and I have had a few times as well :)...

Personally I prefer LCD/LED to Plasma, but that is just a personal preference, because they almost on a par once you get equivalent spec systems.

Well that's not really comparing like for like....and who even mentioned such a budget?

720P LCD's are all 1366x768 and there are plenty of them around for cheap cheap as well.

So you buy the same spec...can't just go and say Plasmas will have a crapper resolution.

Being "able" to play 1080P and rendering 1080P are two different things.

I have never seen Full HD branding from any manufacturer on a non-1080P panel.

This is why I said IF.. not "Get LCD it will have a better resolution"....

Plasma without a doubt. I've been through this before and I tested all my series on all sorts of TVs and in the end, the plasma displayed everything much better. Power consumption and image burn/retention is a non-issue. I've got a 42" Samsung. It's not Full HD but yet the quality is awesome.

Do you use it for PC work at all?

As an addendum (and this is my personal opinion), HD Ready plasma panels should not be sold.. purely because of the 1024x768 resolution on a 16:9 screen format...

That is a very narrow minded statement. Plasma is awesome, regardless of its resolution.

Why on earth would I use a TV for PC work? I don't do work that requires a 42" screen. I watch movies/series on my TV and do my work on my PC. The OP wants it for movies/series/gaming and for that, I would recommend plasma.

Here we go again. This thread should keep some busy for the rest of the long weekend...

But OP, to answer your question - I have a 42" Samsung plasma and I love it. Don't use it for PC (apart from media centre) though.

I am also going to go the Plasma route; with eyesight deteriorating, I find that working on a large screen about 2m away helps a lot. Opening many tiled applications is so much easier as well. I also considered a projector but lamps are too expensive. LED doesn't do black but rather a midnight blue. Some folks don't like it.
