Anyone know how big the patches for "Left 4 Dead 2" are?!?

Also, is there a way to play this without doing the patch updates?!? Only playing local & not online.

And lastly, is there someplace other than Steam to do the updates, because the downloads are VERY slow!?!

I have no clue how big the updates are, but you will be looking at atleast a GB I think. If you are installing it from scratch, then no there is no way to play without the updates (well, officially atleast).

As far as I know IS host's a server for updates. I presume that on an IS account it will automatically use theirs.

Legally the Game is Steam only unless on console. I may be wrong in this regard.
