I updated my gfx drivers and all the games work fine except left 4 dead it hangs? anyone else having trouble with the new Geforce drivers and left 4 dead??

Steam games often throw a wobbly when you update card drivers. I've noticed on many occasions (I've had a steam account for 6 years) after updating that I get the "your video card drivers are out of date" message when starting a game, when I've just updated to the latest drivers. I think it's valve, not updating steam. Pretty annoying. My last problem was with Skype 4 when it was released - it minimized all my steam games to the taskbar as soon as they tried to launch. They fixed that with an update pretty quickly. Maybe check the steam forums?

I am playing left 4 dead offline and my 4850 also hangs quite often, apparently this game is problematic after I did a search as many people got video card trouble.

No problems here, I did have minor freezes and lockups sometime back. After I verified my game files, it was fine again.
