I don't suppose anyone here would know of a recruitment agency that specialises in placements in the Legal profession or positions available(Gauteng)?

I have a mate who is completing his articles in March and the firm he is working for has decided that they can't afford to employ him full time after that so he'll be working there part time in until he can find something else.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I used to work in recruitment ... it's not as pleasant and helpful as people think ... the best bet would be to speak to actual firms, many of them are looking for people such as your friend ... places like http://www.bowman.co.za/Law-Careers.asp are quite helpful, and can also suggest options if they are not able to help.

My advice to him thus far has been to just get his CV out to as many places as possible and hope something pops up, was asking to see if anyone here possibly knew of specialists in this area.

Thanks for the link though Kitten, I'll forward it on.

Sadly, I know pretty much every single recruitment agency that does legal placements in the Jhb (and rest of GP, I guess) area... I'll bet most of them still have me on their books :D

I have a list that I made up for a friend, somewhere. I'll try to track it down. Failing that, I still have emails from all of them, and can tell you how to find more.

Well, it depends on what he wants. Does he want to stay at a law firm? In which case, his best bet is applying directly at a law firm that he's interested in. Does he want to go into legal consulting? Recruitment agencies are your best bet for that?

Even if he wants to work at a law firm, the medium to big firms all make use of agencies as well, and instead of discarding applications, they follow the agencies' recommendations and interview people that the agencies have sent through.

Explore all avenues...

As far as I understand he's willing to take anything he can get at this stage just to get full time employment, but I'll pass on all the advice given, I guess everything helps at this stage.

Here're some easy ways to do it:
Sign in to Career Junction, pnet, legaljobs.co.za. Search for relevant jobs. Look at the names of the recruitment agencies that are advertising the posts. Google them. On their website (or call them up, if necessary), you'll find information on how to submit CVs to them directly. Do so. Then you're on their books, for all the jobs that may be suitable for you.
Usually, they call you in for an interview as well, so that they can make informed recommendations to their clients.

Your friend can contact any of the big law firms or look on their web sites. These would be firms like -

Bowman Gilfillan
Hofmeyr
Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs
Werksmans
Routledge Modise

Etc.

And Deneys Reitz. Those are the biggest ones.

I have an aquaintance working at Hofmeyr - biggest moron on the face of the earth, so I have no regard for the firm based on him and him alone, which is why I could not be bothered listing them under their new name :D

I used to work at Cliffe Dekker.
They were meant to be together :D
