Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota was on Friday sentenced to a R5 000 fine or twelve months' imprisonment for reckless and negligent driving.

Wearing a dark suit, glasses with gold frames and accompanied by his bodyguard, Lekota pleaded guilty to exceeding the national speed limit.

Last Sunday, at 10.44pm, Lekota was arrested for driving at 189km/h in a 120km/h zone near Grasmere toll plaza on the N1 North.

He was released on R1 000 bail.

In a statement read by the defence, Lekota said he admitted that what he had done was wrong.

He also said he admitted he had set a bad example as a minister and felt "intense remorse".

"I have learned a hard lesson," he said in the statement.

Lekota then took the witness stand at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.
 
I will be the bigger person and say "Well done for saying that - may you live as long as you live by those words".
 
What was the lesson? That he shouldn't get caught next time, or that he won't do it again?

Damn - now you destroyed my "be a bigger person" thing.

The lesson he learned, was that the R1000 bribe would have been money well spent.
 
Moederloos, I sincerely doubt that you are a bigger person than Lekota. You just don't get as many invites to buffets as him. :D
 
Please... the lesson he learned is that next time he will get a chauffeur to drive at 189km/h and then plead ignorance IF he gets caught! :D
 
Why did they arrest him though? Was the speed high enough for that?
 
5000 for doing 189kmh!!! Wow thats nothing man. If we had to do it they would take our cars away!!

Hardly, the courts are FUBAR when it comes to traffic offenses.
The foreigner that has a R1,6 billion rand claim against the Road Accident Fund was knocked off his bike during a hit and run. The dude lost and arm, a leg and has numerous other permanent injuries.
The car that illegally overtook and hit the bike fled the scene of the accident.
The coppers arrested him much later and then Mzuvukile Nana was fined R500 for reckless driving. :eek:
Help me out with that, he should be in jail!

The victim was an internet billionaire with earnings in excess of R100million per annum, hence the huge claim against the RAF.
 
Well done 'Terror' Lekota. If the people on this forum are honest enough, we will recognise that something like this could have happened to any of us (.... and if not to us personally, then to a spouse/child/close friend/relative). I've been a passenger in a car stopped by the cops on the way to Durban, doing over 180kph - and I find it hard to believe that anyone on this forum has not, at some stage, driven or been in a car doing over 180kph.

And those who are really honest will admit to paying bribes to avoid arrest, as did the driver in my case when he was near-arrested on the way to Durbs.
 
I honestly would not feel safe in a car doing over 180km/hr and hence have never driven at that speed :)

mine only goes to 175 max on downhill hehe....
