Vague question is vague.

What will it be used for? you might not even have the correct funds at all if she needs a beefy machine.

Screen resolution might be important depending on the course studied. Can't do graphic design on 1377 x 768 laptop. CPU might be important for 3D rendering digital design etc. How long is a piece of string.

I'm guessing it will be used 90% for Winamp and movies. Lol.
She's gonna be studying a BEd(education)

No, doesn't work like that. Please post the full system specs. Better, give a link to the two devices.

You need to look at CPU / APU / GPU, Memory, SSD, Display etc.

You can't make a decision by just looking at the CPU.

Ultimately don't get anything with less than the following:

HD 1920x1080 14" Display
8GB Memory
256GB SSD, you don't want a notebook with just an HDD. Doesn't matter how basic the work is you will be doing.

CPU without a GPU (Graphics Card) is okay for just general productivity apps, but then rather look at the AMD Ryzen models.

But always better to get something with an APU or a CPU + Dedicated GPU.

I would go with the i5 for the slight boost in performance, but your daughter might not even notice seeing that she won't be using it for anything graphic intensive as the notebooks are for general productivity and internet search.

The display is pretty poor quality in terms of brightness so she will need to work in an area that does not have direct lighting.

What about a MacBook Air? No options available? (Ouch, 2 of 3 times OP's budget. Eina!)

Hi Stormersfan,

I support the Sharks, but WP is lekker.

On another note, the i3 will be more than adequate for most work.

I know you are looking for a monthly deal, but if you are able to, I have a Dell Latitude 3440 in stock I can do at R10,000 for you to assist, i5-1335U-256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, Windows 10 Professional. Link: Dell Latitude 3440

Otherwise you are welcome to ping me for options you are looking at, if I can advise I will :)
