You either love Lenovo's IBM ThinkPad range of business notebooks or you don't. Encased in black plastic, ThinkPads are instantly recognisable. They're known for their durability and reliability. And some people (I'm among them) think they're really good-looking machines. That's not a view that's universally shared, though, as a quick vox pop at the FM showed.
Like other ThinkPad fans, I was concerned after China's Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad line from IBM in 2005. Thankfully, there is no evidence, yet, that the deal will affect the build quality of the series. The (relatively) new ThinkPad T61, which we looked at this week, is another solid performer. The highly configurable midrange machine sports a 14,1-inch wide-screen matte screen (1 440 x 900-pixel resolution), Centrino 2 Duo processor, Wi-Fi, three USB ports, FireWire port and DVD burner.
The machine can be specced with anything up to 4 GB of RAM (it ships with Vista Business, so 2 GB is the bare minimum) and up to a 160 GB hard drive. The T61 comes with a range of management features, including Intel's Active Management Technology, which make it easier for corporate IT departments to keep the machine serviced.
If you're a road warrior, the T61's 2,7 kg may be a bit heavy. If so, you may want to check out Lenovo's class-leading ThinkPad X61 subnotebook instead - still a chunk of black plastic, but smaller and lighter.
