Bought a lenovo laptop one weekend. Few days later setup laptop and all work fine. Week later screen dead. Fans turn hdd clicks and some led lights go on.

Next weekend took it in for rma.

Results are that software fault and that OS must be reloaded. Software not covered by warranty but it was oem software. Win 8.1 came with laptop.

Can anyone advise if they have experienced such an issue. I have never heard of an OS being faulty and resulting in a dead screen?

Did you see the BIOS screen on startup?

Could have been driver issues if screen did not display under windows, but if the screen was completely dead (ie POST not viewable on screen) then this is a BS story.

Sheesh, whoever sold you a laptop and then claimed that a fault was caused by software and therefore not covered by warranty is screwing you over big-time.

I bought a Lenovo laptop from Takealot recently, ran into a software glitch with it, and they exchanged it for a full refund which I spent on a different make (they'd even offered to give me the refund cash back, no problem). I was suitably impressed: THAT is the way returns should be done.

When you start the machine does a windows loading icon at least show on screen and is it just windows that doesn't show?

Can you get into the BIOS?

When is the wake?

Thats my point. If OS is issue you should see BIOS at least.
Argument is I should have returned within 7 day period. Think motherboard was replaced but had asked for new unit not fixing of the unit.

"Good Afternoon

I did a follow up with the supplier regarding your unit. They found that the unit has a software problem and needs to be reloaded.

The operating system is not covered by the warranty.

Please let me know if I should tell them to go ahead or if you will be reloading it yourself."

No screen is totally dead.

No screen is totally dead.
Make sure to turn the laptop off. Hold the power key in for about 5-8 seconds.

With the system still powered off, press and hold the Shift and F8 keys.
While still holding Shift and F8, press and release the Power button. Continue to hold Shift and F8.

Also while starting the laptop hold in the blue button immediately after startup. does anything show on screen??

Returned laptop to seller. Waiting for return of laptop "fixed" by reloading OS not covered by warranty . Yet laptop sold with OS.

Stay away from Lenovo... saw a lot of this at a previous workplace... we were RMAing laptops like every other week.

In response to cost implications to reload faulty OS

"Good Morning

This is at a cost that is not covered by the warranty of this unit, unfortunately.

To reload the operating system is R650.00 normally. Please let me know if I should give them the go ahead.

Thank you."

Where did you buy it? Just so you can warn other people here.............
Eish intention not to name and shame but to check if this dead screen could be a OS fault as I have never had such an issue with OS. There is always some BIOS at least.
Assume motherboard was dead.

Do you know the cause of the problem? At my work apparently also similar problems.

Absolutely amazing to want to charge me for a faulty product. If its the OS then why not simply reload and use the oem product key linked to laptop? Methinks its a load of nonsense.
Sadly it seems supporting local is not best. Ah well.

I assume hdd died thus no OS and Lenovo charging for it.

Awaiting a response as I indicated that I will report Lenovo to MS.
Seller will advise Lenovos response.

Lenovo says they dont charge but the warranty service provider SDM/TCM? does sometimes charge customers. They Lenovo will ensure OS loaded free of charge.
Seller says all sorted and just waiting for delivery.
