Some lens - no matter the cost - have a reputation for being sharp and need to be owned. You've all been in the game longer than I have, so of these three :

Canon EF 35mm F2.0 (R2,899.00)
Canon EF 50mm F2.5 Compact Macro (R2739.00)
Canon EF 28mm F2.8 (R1,999.00)

I get can each with my ebucks at Kalahari - but the Canon 50mm 1.8mm is not there :(

The 35mm is considered a tad too long for the crop body and the compact macro is near useless with the expensive add-on. That leaves you with the 28mm but the Sigma 30mm is generally thought to be the one to go for. It's R4999 though but you're getting f/1.4 which is pretty cool given the couple of bucks more.

What is a compact macro?
Different to a macro?
What's the add on?

The 35mm gives you an effective focal length of 56mm which is pretty close to a normal prime on a crop body.

Buy a cheap second hand 18-55 kit lens and figure out what focal length you want. :)

But he mentioned nothing about any normal prime. The words were wide angle and my understanding of that focal length range is 21mm-35mm on 35mm equivalent bodies. So yes 35mm will do but 30mm is slap bang in the middle of that.

Caveat: - I'm just arguing for the sake of it so don't go and get into any miff tree please :)

Good advice this.

It's not?

Unless I don't know how to use Kalahari?

But if you go to the link bwana posted, it doesn't give a price. When you click new, it says seller 'FOTO AND HI FI WORLD'

Sorry - maybe bad terms :/

I only have a 70-200 ... and 70 is too long for most things.

I'd like something that I could actually take photos at braai's and inside the house. I took my lens to a wedding and had to stand quite a distance away from everyone to get full length body shots ;)

Ah, my bad. Link said Kalahari so I just assumed.

Then maybe look at a 24-70 2.8? It should cover the wider to mid range lengths, and Kalahari has a Sigma in stock for R6299-00. Research that lens though.

I have R3,000.00 ebucks :(

Fair enough :) But imo unless you're going pro anytime soon, or using the wide angle for a lot of landscape-style shots, it'd be worth it to save up a bit and get a zoom like the 24-70 (or even something cheaper). Carrying around a prime will be a bit of a pain at parties/braais if you have to keep swapping out the lenses.
