Lens prices coming down?

I realise this will probably take a year or so to trickle down to S.A. but I thought it worth mentioning. I dropped off a film at Jessops the other day, and noticed they are selling the Canon EF 70-200L f/4 USM for £559. I nearly tripped, fell and cracked my head open! :eek:

Knowing that Jessops can sometimes be pricey, I looked around and found it (on Amazon) for £489 - damn, I'm tempted.

Anyway, it seems that most lenses have come down a bit in price. Lets hope that trend continues!

I bought a lense multiplier (the 1.4x) at FotoDiscountWorld and it's price had actually gone up. The 400mm (I'll get that when there's enough moola), went down by R4000... but only because they bought a lot of stock from Canon and had received better prices from Canon.

But that's not a bad price you saw though. I currently have that lense (really really awesome).... but atm it costs in the region of R9000, the last time I checked. I paid R6700 for it a year ago.
 
Yeah, I guess S.A. is slightly behind the curve with respect to the global economy. Not a bad place to be though :)

If I do get the 70-200L, I would go for the f/4 IS. I'm thinking of selling my 18-200IS and Sigma 70-300 and getting the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and 70-200mm L f/4 IS USM along with maybe a 1.4x TC, which would give me the same range as I have now, but stabilised and of much higher quality.

There are some rumours swirling around that Canon is brining out new, updated 70-200mm lenses before the end of the year. Stores might be selling off their current stock levels.

Given the enormous price jump in the lenses that have been replaced recently (think 24mm f/1.4 and the TSE lenses), that's more reason still to get the current ones. I mean, the 70-200mm f/4 (IS and non-IS) models are considered to be some of the sharpest zooms on the market at the moment, across all manufacturers.
 
I noticed the Sigma 50-500 150-500 have come down quite a bit. Saw the 150-500 for R10,000 the other day.
 
The rumour going around is that the 70-200 2.8 IS will see a replacement most likely featuring an update to the IS. IIRC it has an older generation IS than the 70-200 f4 IS. Canon has also recently unveiled a new hybrid IS system, but from what I've read it will be more effective for macro type photography.
 
I must say the current 70-200f2.8IS has very good IS. I've been able to hold that thing at amazingly slow speeds, much better than my 18-105VR's VR. So this new IS, with compensation for forward and backward movement, will be even more awesome. IS FTW (and I don't mean Internet Solutions)
 
I think other than the addition of the panning mode, the IS in the 70-200mm f/4 is the same as on the 24-105L, which is very good. Way better than on my 18-200 IS. The 24-105L is a very recent lens, I think it was launched in 2005?
