Lens recommendations please

I've often wondered why they do it that way - esp when you cant even use the lenses on fullframe.

Because it's just the angle of view that changes, not the focal length. Same is with MF lenses. 50mm on a Pentax 67 is really wide. IIRC the negatives were exactly double the size, so 100mm would give the same field of view as 50mm on a 35mm film/FF-DSLR body. That doesn't mean it's 50mm lens, it's still 100mm, i.e. still bigger and heavier.

The more I think about this the more confused I get :(
So is the wide end of a EF-S 18-55 on a 350D wider (will you get a picture with a greater angle of what you're taking a photo of) than a EF 28mm on a 350D? But more or less the same as a 28mm on a full frame?
