Lessons were learnt from the largely rejected e-tolling system, the ANC in Gauteng said on Tuesday.

Provincial ANC chairman Paul Mashatile acknowledged that the public believed they were not properly consulted prior to the green light being given to the system.

"We should accept we needed a longer consultation process," he told the Gauteng E-toll Advisory Panel at the provincial legislature.

Alternative methods to e-tolling should have been explored prior to the system being implemented.

He told the panel the current system was a "complete departure" from what government had agreed to with the SA National Roads Agency Limited when the concept of e-tolls was raised in 1997.

Gauteng premier David Makhura established the panel on July 17 to assess the social and economic impact of e-tolls.

The review panel is intended to examine the economic and social impact of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and the electronic tolling system set up to fund it.

The panel is expected to present its findings to Makhura at the end of November.

The length of the consultation process has nothing to do with it .. it was the arrogance of Sanral with their pre-decided agendas and the ANC's obvious level of corruption where ridiculous amounts were spent with no consideration to real benefits to us that made people not pay.

But don't worry, the public also learned lessons from tolls: The main one is that the ANC is pretty much the same as the NP except for more criminals and that they cannot ever be trusted.

ANC the saints, they are not to blame for this chaos

My displeasure comes from the Highway upgrades being done as a "World Cup 2010" upgrade. Once it was over, we're told to pay for it...

The one thing I have to say is the the response times and service level of the SANRAL road support staff. Those guys are quick to be at the accident scene and direct traffic, render assistance, etc. My hats off to them.

You were lucky. I've had incidents where they were nowhere to be seen for ages and another occasion where they were the accident.
