Lesufi unveils plan to stop corruption

Principals at schools in Gauteng would be rotated each year, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi announced on Tuesday.

“Every September principals should be rotated in order to be loyal to the department,” he said.

Lesufi was addressing journalists at a media briefing at the Department of Education in Braamfontein.

He said that the rotation of principals was influenced by Corruption Watch reports which showed that most corruption as schools was done by principals because they had been at one school for too long.

Lesufi also said the results of preliminary examination that learners wrote recently were of a poor standard, especially in the fields of accounting, mathematics and mathematical literacy.

“We aren't where I want this system to be,” he said, acknowledging that there was much room for improvement in the country's educational system.

“There's a clear indication that we need to invest on what is happening in the classroom,” he said.

Not that I was ever the greatest supporter of school tradition and so on but a headmaster or principle is something of a key player in that aspect - an anchor on which to build a school over time and strive to be the best. Time, however, is exactly what they won't have when playing musical chairs to the tune of the ruling party. Switching headmasters like light bulbs is a terrible idea.

This will also end up making, well, principles at least, even less accountable without a doubt. How this is meant to reduce corruption is beyond me.

Haha. "Loyalty to the department" - how about we prioritise teaching the kids mathematics rather? This sounds suspiciously like the cabinet circus where they keep reshuffling things every 20 minutes to avoid a situation where a minister is actually accountable for the outcomes of past actions (or inaction).

A strong VP and an executive committee can work too. We had that at my school...the principal was required to rotate every 4 years & wasn't actively involved in the actual running of the school while the VP was there for 20+ years & knew everything. Its a little precarious though...if you get a principal that wants to make his/her mark then it rocks that carefully tuned boat.

Lesufi has no background in basic education. To my knowledge he has never worked in a school. He studied commerce.
