Lets sort out this HT issue ONCE AND FOR ALL

my motherboard is:
Asus P4P800S P4 2.4GHz
Intel 848P Chipset.
I have no idea what the type of HT CPU is, but I know it has an 800Mhz FSB [:I]
512Mb Memory

stupid question time again: will disabling hyperthreading affect my system's performance?

if all else fails... influence with hammer

All very well submitting machine details etc, but how are we going to take this further. We need to find out who writes these drivers and get them sorted out. If we all start writing mails to the respective party complaining about the HT issue, I'm sure IPWireless, or whoever will start taking notice.....

Intresting thing about HT i saw somewhere the other day acourding to
these ppl HT have a problem when 2 memory stick are in adjacent sockets i o w put memeory sticks in socket 1 and 3 not in 1 and 2
or something like that ...

Bad news:

The guys (mcci.com) that wrote the drivers for IPWireless don't have a contract with IPWireless anymore, for the drivers they wrote, so the chances of it happening quick is zero.

I've had a look at mauiskyfiber.com's (another IPWireless implementation) driver/dialler packages too, and although their dialler software is a bit of a later release, the actual modem drivers are exactly the same release as we have.

Interresting to see a MSI board also having problems. Also the older Intel 848P chip having problems...

Coming back to CPU's. If someone with the new Prescott P4 can tell us if they are having problems as well. For those who dont know, it is also a 800MHz FSB CPU, but it has a 1MB (instead of 512K) cache.

as memory configuration goes, I don't think that will be an issue.

It is clear that close to 90% of HT board has this problem. Only the Intel manufactured 865 boards working. Although not the 875.

The problem is definitly with the modem drivers and not with the motherboards.

ProAsm What can we do? I know we can keep informing Sentech through conventional channels, but could you PLEASE[:D] help us through unofficial channels?

Another solution would be that Sentech ship the modems with ethernet cables and and exstra NIC[:D]

Sorry ChemichalX forgot stupid question time[:D]

Yes the Lack of HT does impact your performance badly. Especially if you are running multiple processes at the same time. But the biggest thing gained by HT is that your computer responds better (to user inputs) under heavy usage.

also HT is very difficult to benchmark. But easy to notice.

Bottom line. If you multitask heavily, it a disaster. If not It's unfortunate.

Only once we have a useable database can any action of any kind be taken.
So it is up to you guys to inform the Help desk, get a ticket number.
The problem will also probably be mentioned on the Sentech Website at some stage.
One cannot just go and blame IPWireless for a thing like this as it could well be an HT problem which is maybe incompatible with a host of other things but has now come to light because of the interference of ones Internet connection.

Thanx a lot ProAsm

We appreciate the effort you have put into this project. The news that you(sentech) will be keeping a database, is very reassuring. Great to see a company that responds to the problems of it's clients (Unlike another company I know).

Thanx

Haszak (for yr info):
I quote from P4 Titan GA-IPE1000 (P4, Intel 865PE) mobo handbook:
OPEN QUOTE "

GA-IPE1000 Series includes 4 DIMM sockets, and each Channel has two DIMM sockets as following:
>> Channel A : DIMM 1, DIMM 2
>> Channel B : DIMM 3, DIMM 4
.....The dual channel technology will operate when 2 memory modules are inserted individually into Channel A and B. If you install two memory modules not in the same channel, the dual channel technology will NOT operate.

" END QUOTE.

HT==dual channel

Yes I wanted to say something on this but dont know enuf about it.
Basically those who have HT problems have you got 2 memory chips in, one in each channel because if you haven't then that is your problem.
HT is being enabled into fresh air.
Just a thought [:)]

I suspected that might be the problem, but when I saw so many people with the problem, I thought it couldn't be that. How could so many people have their memory configured incorrectly(the slots are color-coded).

Hyper-threading is not related to the memory but how threads are executed in the cpu core.

The memory configuration you are referring to is called "dual channel". All this means is that if you have two sticks of memory and place them in the same colour slots i.e. both in blue or both in black then each stick of memory gets its own dedicated channel effectively increasing overall memory bandwidth.

Having said this it is not totally out of bounds to suggest that the memory is at fault, even if indirectly. If the problem only exists on the 875 chipset then it may be related to PAT (Performance Acceleration Technology) which is only available on the 875 chipset. What this basically does is give your memory a bit of a kick and can increase performance up to 10% in certain circumstances.

For the purists out there some motherboard manufacturers have enabled quasi-PAT on their 865 products e.g. Asus have Memory Acceleration Mode on their 865 motherboards. If PAT is causing the problem then MAM may also.

What I suggest is for someone with an 875 chipset to disable PAT in the BIOS, enable hyper-threading and see what happens. My feeling is that it is hyper-threading and not PAT causing the problem and all that is required is a recompiled driver that supports symmetric multi-threading and processing.

Can't disable PAT in the BIOS (Intel Board with 875 Chipset). HT is configurable, but not PAT...

Hmmm ok that makes it a little more difficult to test [;)] I have an Asus P4P800 SE (865) motherboard and can enable/disable MAM so just assumed it was possible to disable PAT. Perhaps a few others should check their BIOS before we give up on it. At the end of the day even if PAT is the problem it would still require an updated driver so at this point it is purely academic.

Did you try using the advanced option in BIOS, I can't guarentee the PAT option exists, but I've noticed recently that several boards (mainly Gigabytes, also some Intels)lack many of the BIOS options that should be visible, hit ctrl+F1 from the main BIOS page, and a few extra options become visible.
*Note* this only works in certain BIOS types.
