Lets work around it / lets don't give a ****.

This is becoming problematic for me, to point where I'm completely depressed about work. All I want at the end of the day is to take stock and say I did a great job or I did a **** job. If I did a **** job what could I do to make it a great job.

BUT

After I have taken stock and identified the problem, it now becomes a problem working with "Lets work around it / lets don't give a ****" attitudes. This seems to be the motto of too many people. From what I can tell they are just there to do what they do with the least bit of effort or resistance even if it means that they either work with below par standards or keep on propagating them.

I've tried various of approaches to this problem so that I can work more efficiently, thus helping the company in the end.

HOWEVER

It now seems that because a lot of them are not willing to attribute towards change for the better, I'm the complainer or he who stirs. You know... why the **** do you want to change this? Why the **** do you not just do you part and work around the problems? Lets change this later.... and later never happens.

It is hard then to identify with this kind of culture, the one that just don't seem to want to give a **** about things that matter that can actually save the company money and better them as a whole.

What to do? Shoot myself? I doubt that would work although it has been considered.

I do wonder how general this problem is...

o well...

Doesn't sound very good - as the company's bottom line will suffer in the long run, what with code that will need to be rewritten...

Maybe time to spruce your CV up and start hunting for other work?

Sadly people no longer take pride in their work or solve the root issues, they just tend to work around things and don't care about quality or anything like that. Sad really.

Please don't. Rather shoot those responsible and take a chance with the system.

(I absolve responsibility if you take the second suggestion)

Pretty common these days even with the higher ups who want quick results at any cost and then leave when things start going south.
I tend to ignore them all as much as possible and just fix things myself as much as possible instead of watching movies etc.
But it gets to all the good devs that work in such environments.

I suppose that is one option after the 50 cal

Not sure what to do if you are in the [very] minority who actually wants to do their job and take of issues, not just working around it all the time.

Do you work in government? It sounds like it :p

That thought crossed my mind, but I don't

Sadly yes, it seems to be so.

In my experience this is quite a common problem. Especially where those in charge were never developers or have little knowledge of the challenges and good practices of software development and so don't necessarily understand the long-term implications of leaving their system in its current sad state.

They will know when it falls over. Oh boy then they will know... but then it will be your team's fault :p

Yeah, I'll admit that it does get to me as well from time to time. Luckily I have a supportive SO who recognises when this happens and helps me get over it. Not easy!

Every company has its fair share of problems with the people working for it. If it's not individuals always bringing personal problems to work, it will be the clockwatchers, the only-works-for-a-salary people, the back stabbers and my personal favourate, the ass kissers.

So in my opinion changing jobs for this reason alone would be futile. Your work attitude is perfectly aligned with company needs and vision. Striving to do better, work smarter, be economically more productive, etc. All the nice goodies.

My advice to you would be to forget about the tools working with you and do the best You can with the tools at your disposal, so that at the end of the day you can say, I did the best job that I possibly could in the environment given to me.

As for the tools, ****'em
