As with most all-in-one printers, the Lexmark X6570 is a great multitasker. Although it can be connected to a network and act as a wireless print server, it’s let down by slow printing speeds and low-quality prints.
Lexmark’s X6570 multifunction device (printer, copier, scanner and fax machine) is a decent-looking white printer with brushed aluminium case parts. It features everything you would (and should) expect from a multifunction device in this price range.
It features PictBridge print support for PictBridgeenabled digital cameras, making printing directly from your camera a breeze. It sports a multi-format card reader that can read most flash-based cards, enabling direct printing from supported cards. It has a hundred-page, toploading paper tray, ensuring that you always have enough paper for whatever it is you may want to print.
However, what makes the X6570 ‘special’ is that it has a built-in Wi-Fi module and comes bundled with an excellent software package. The included OS X software, however, is a bit of a disaster.
The outstanding feature of the X6570 is definitely its Wi-Fi capabilities. Using the supplied software, it’s easy to set up the printer as a wireless print server on any network – wired or wireless. The wireless printing capabilities mean that your laptop doesn’t have to be connected to the office network via Ethernet – as long as you’re in range of the printer’s Wi-Fi broadcast range, you can connect to it from anywhere in the office (or home) and print.
However, apart from the built-in Wi-Fi module and the excellent software, most other aspects of the X6570 are a bit of a letdown. The control panel, although featuring the usual functions, sports a small monochrome display, making it difficult to read (a large colour display would make a world of difference).
The X6570 managed to print plain text documents and black-and white text documents with some graphics at 7.2 pages per minute. However, printing high-resolution photos using photoprinting paper slowed the printer down to just one page per minute.
Other than print quality and printspeed issues, the Lexmark X6570 is a bargain for users who want maximum versatility for the price.
