This is a tidy and very capable unit. As multifunction printers go, this one offers mid-range capabilities at an entry-level price. Its only weakness is in the form of low capacity ink cartridges, but otherwise it performs well. Although setup requires several steps, these are clearly documented for

When I first set up this unit, I was thoroughly impressed with the ‘for dummies’ systematic setup instructions. Although some of these are, for some of us, a bit too detailed, this just means that anyone can set this
up with a minimum of fuss. Thereafter, I started using it, and was somewhat underwhelmed to begin with, until I realised that I was subconsciously comparing it to models that sell for five times the price – hardly fair!

Once I had applied the proper context, I realised that this is a very well-priced unit for its capabilities. It is a “’multifunction printer’” (often referred to as an “’MFP’”), which means that it is both a printer and a scanner, and can leverage these two functions to also act as a photocopier and fax machine. It connects to a PC via a wired or wireless network, and directly to a telephone line or switchboard.

It also sports slots for a variety of memory- card formats, and a USB port that you can directly connect a PictBridge device (such as a digital camera) to. The Lexmark X9575 is a fairly compact unit, with a relatively small footprint. Thus, it can conceivably be set up on the same desk as a computer. This compactness translates into its functionality – this unit is not designed to churn out a heavy stream of work, but will rather perform admirably for fairly light workloads.

This fact is reflected by the ink cartridges, which consist of a black ink and a single colour ink cartridge. These are not huge, and the colours cannot be replaced individually, as they can be in larger, heavier-duty models. Despite this fact, the Lexmark X9575 is very flexible in terms of its connectivity options, with support for both wired and wireless networks. This means that it can be set up pretty much wherever is best within a small office environment.

Operation is relatively quiet, and fairly quick – it won’t break any world records in either category, but is satisfactory in both, particularly given its affordable price-point. Impressively, it can do double-sided printing. The control interface is very intuitive to use, and includes an adjustable LCD for navigating menus and options.

The software that ships with it is also very easy to use, and is organised in a task-orientated fashion, making it easy for even relatively computer-illiterate people to accomplish what they need to.
