lexus ct200h

If you test drive both, you will go for the BMW if its in your price range :)..

It'd be irresponsible of me not to test drive both, but you are more than likely 100% correct.

But always a pleasure to help... helps keep the urge for me to buy a car at bay for a bit longer.

Then I am glad to have been of some assistance to you too :D

Now I also need to look into what the maintenance costs on these two vehicles will be. Coming from a tazz, I imagine I'll need to be sitting down when I find out what the beemer's upkeep is going to cost me.

A standard service on the BMW will hit you for about R1200 - R1500... major service probably at around R2500.. (give or take). I'd actually expect the Cruze to be in the same price range, if not a bit more expensive. Tyres on the BMW may be more expensive because they may be runflats.

There will be plenty of non dealership mechanics that specialise in BMW, so I would not worry too much about that. The tyres however are an issue (well it was for me), but you can simply buy a spare that sits loose in your boot (probably not ideal in a family car), get a small compressor and repair kit or rely on your insurance (many of them will fix a flat free of charge). Or fork out for run flats and have a slightly more uncomfortable ride. I can see it now, you're going to end up with an Audi :p

@ToxicBunny Yeah, those prices are much more than I'm used to, but definitely doable. Also, this says the service intervals are only every 30k km, with oil changes every 15k km. If that's accurate, then the service costs are really not that bad.

@Archer
What's this about buying a spare..? Does the BMW not have place for a spare wheel?! (Sorry, that's a foreign concept to me). Coming from a tazz, I probably wouldn't know the comfort-level difference between run flats and no run flats on a beemer.

And nnnnnooooooOOOOO!!! No VW/Audi for me. Look, I think the TT, for example, is sexy, but for some (subconscious?) reason I am unable to explain I just don't want a VW/Audi.

Okay, so, I haven't test-driven either vehicle yet (but the little boy in me wants a 320d :D ), however, maintenance costs on a beemer has me in doubts. I have been looking at some extended warranty options. Would this plan (see pages 11 & 12), for example, be reasonable for a 2009 320d, or this 2006 320d?

I've been looking at the depreciation of newer vehicles, and it's just sad. So now I'm aiming for a somewhat older vehicle, even if out of its original manufacturer warranty.

Dead: Lexus CT200h

In another installment of “They still make that car?” Lexus has decided to discontinue the CT200h hybrid hatchback after the 2017 model year. This is not a shocking development with cheap gas and buyers flocking to crossovers, but the CT200h was an underrated upscale hatchback.

According to Car and Driver, the CT200h will reach the end of its lifecycle in the American market in 2017, but Lexus will continue to sell it elsewhere. Its demise isn’t really surprising, since the automaker sold less than 9,000 units of the CT200h in 2016.

The CT200h had a fairly reasonable starting price of around $31,000, but it was essentially a fancy version of the Prius with hybrid tech that has been around since 2012. The current Prius can get up to 52 mpg combined, while the CT200h only manages 42 mpg combined.

However, the CT was a bit “sportier” to drive than the Prius and comes with a much nicer interior if you have are looking for luxury feel with your fuel efficiency.

In some markets you can score some heavy discounts off the remaining inventory and I’ve even see some CT200h models with cheaper lease programs than the less expensive Prius.

Now, if you are a pre-owned buyer looking for a nice commuter car, lightly used CT200hs can be found for around $20,000 many of which will carry the Lexus CPO unlimited mile warranty.

The CT200h probably won’t be missed, but it could be a great value for the right buyer looking for a fuel-efficient luxury car in a small package.

Lexus hands CT200h fresh face (and redesigned rump)

The Lexus CT200h has been around since 2010 … and the Japanese brand has just handed it another update.

Toyota’s luxury arm says it has sold more than 300 000 examples of the compact hybrid hatchback worldwide, although it hasn’t proven particularly popular in South Africa (according to Lightstone Auto, a mere four units were sold in SA in 2016).

The five-door hatch features an updated front end, including a new mesh pattern for the signature spindle grille. Interestingly, the integrated bumper that ran across the grille just below the Lexus emblem has been scrapped, along with the horizontal bars within the grille.

The foglamp bezels are now painted metallic grey and are surrounded by an outer frame with a triangular cross-section and sharp edges. The daytime running lights, meanwhile, have been repositioned above the headlamps.

At the rear you’ll find new, wider L-shaped taillamps in an all-LED configuration, with LED indicators at the bottom of the assembly. There’s also new back door garnish, while the reshaped lower part of the rear bumper is now metallic silver and black. The rear reflector bezels have also painted metallic grey to match the foglamp surrounds up front. New alloy wheel designs have furthermore been added.

Lexus will also offer the updated CT200h with new two-tone exterior paint schemes and two new colours for the F Sport model (which also features a handful of unique exterior updates).

Inside, a larger 10,3-inch display screen (up from seven inches) is available, while the interior colour palette has been expanded with new combinations. Lastly, enhanced safety systems (such as a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control and automatic high beam) have also been made available.

The petrol-hybrid powertrain, meanwhile, is unchanged.

Lexus CT 200h Gets Fresh Design and Kit

Lexus has updated its CT 200h compact hybrid hatchback with new exterior and interior styling as well new equipment and options. Take a look at what changed on the Lexus CT 200h.

Hybrids are not very popular in South Africa and the Lexus CT 200h barely has a sales pulse on the local market. Last month, only 1 CT 200h was sold locally. It has however experienced more success in global markets where more than 300 000 have been sold since its introduction in 2011.

Nonetheless, Lexus has now updated the model with enhanced styling and an improved equipment offering.

Chika Kato, Chief Engineer of the CT 200h, summed up the impact of the changes: “The CT 200h has been refreshed and revitalised by enhancing its progressiveness. Its updated design is more emotional and sporty, making it the ideal premium hybrid compact car for younger customers who enjoy spirited driving, but care about the environment.”

What’s changed?

A larger 10.3-inch infotainment screen is now fitted and buyers have more interior trim and colour options to choose from.

The front-end has been reworked with the daytime running lights now positioned the single-projector headlights while retaining their arrowhead shape.

The grille now features a new mesh pattern while the previous integrated bumper section dividing the upper and lower grille has now been removed. Metallic grey fog light bezels are now set in sharp-edged triangular surrounds.

“We have pursued a new look by reversing the position of the LED headlight unit and DRL compared to the previous model. The result is a look that’s more impactful than before. Moreover, the “L” motif of the DRL strengthens the Lexus signature,” said Tetsuo Miki, Chief Designer of the CT 200h.

At the rear, the CT 200h benefits from new LED L-shaped taillights with the indicator lights moved to the lower edge of the taillight housing. The tailgate now features a new garnish while the lower bumper has been reshaped and now has a metallic silver and black finish.

The CT 200h can also be equipped with new 10-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels with a combination machined and dark metallic finish.

New interior trim and colour options are on offer and the CT 200h is now equipped with a larger 10.3-inch Lexus Display Audio screen.
