lg 387 dvd recorder

My brother got this dvd recorder.
He only has av from dstv. When he wants to timer records the dvd tells him to first auto program the thing, but he has no tv antenna.
I saw in the manual to select input AV, but the moment he wants to record it say auto program the thing.
He stays far, he phone the shop where he bought it and they you must have a tv antenna.

1 he doesnt need an antenna if he is using the AV cables and
2 has he set the date and time on it?
it wont work if he hasnt set the date and time, also i think you have the wrong model number the 387 is just a dvd player not a recoder
 
+1 for setting the date and time first on the LG's, otherwise they won't work. Then set the input to AV1 or AV2 depending on where the DSTV is connected (AV1 is the rear connector on most LG recorders and AV2 the front connector)

Also, if you power-on and get the flashing "PR01", use the remote and press the Input button to cycle to AV1, and leave it there - if there is a power failure, or the recorder is unplugged, you will have to do this over each time...

Is he using normal RCA Composite cables (yellow - video, red/white - audio) for the conenction from DSTV to Recorder?

yes, that is what I call AV.
Or am I wrong.

He did all, but the moment he select timer record it says he must do ch setup first.
lg RH387 is the model number.

with model numbers every character is important, lg 387 is a dvd player lg rh387 is a HDD dvd recorder
the answer is in front of you the dvd asks for a ch setup then run a ch setup (it wont pick up any chanels but it will be happy :D , also ask him if he is actualy picking chanel or av input when setting

When selecting av, it display on the tv through it.

He does all this, but still when pressing timer record.....

It cant be that this device only time record on RF? it is LG.
 
Press HOME and select TV option. Press v V to select the [Timer Record] and
press ENTER to display [Timer record List] menu. Use v V to select [New] and
press ENTER to display [Timer Record] menu. Adjust each field as described
below using v V b B.
[Media]: Choose a media to record to (HDD or DVD).
[PR]: Choose a memorized program number, or one of the external inputs
from which to record. (You cannot select DV input.)
[Date]: Choose a date up to 1 month in advance.
[Start Time]: Set the start time.
[End Time]: Set the end time.
[Repeat] Choose a desired repeat (Once, Daily (Mon-Fri), or Weekly).
Press REC repeatedly to set the recording mode (XP, SP, LP, EP or MLP) then
press ENTER to set a timer recording. The “Rec OK” or “OK” on the [Check]
field on the [Timer Record List] menu indicates the timer recording is
programmed correctly.

This is the manual, and he use AV.
 
Only after connecting the thing to a antenna and got some channels, does AV works for timer recording.
 
I recently bought a sony dvd recorder HX780 for R2.7k. It has a 160GB HDD. They didn't have stock of the LG, else I may have chosen the LG. But from what I see I think its the same principle. They all look very similar too.
