I can buy a demo version of this DVD recorder for R699, or HiFi Corp has it new for R1199. Any opinions out there on this machine? Sales staff unsure whether it has a built-in tuner. Would really appreciate an opinion from anyone who has one. Thanx!

Great thanx. Also managed to download the full user manual, so the tuner aspect is confirmed. Also has the facility to set up to 16 timer recordings.

Now all I need to know is whether anyone else out there has one and would recommend it -- and then whether to go for the R699 demo or R1199 new. Opinions?

EDIT: HiFi Corp says a supplied code will disable the region coding, currently set at 2. Is this really true for all LG DVD players, as they insist?

If anyone else out there is interested in one of these, I see Makro has just put them on special right through until Christmas, @ R1099 (against HiFi Corp's R1199 and Game's R1249 [I think])

I have the version without the harddrive. It is excellent and has served me well thus far. I've chosen the one without the HDD coz my HD PVR has one so didn't need it. That price for R699 is very worth it, 400 smacks off. The only issue that I have is that the USB port only supports FAT32 and doesn't read flash disks over 8GB (or 16GB can't remember). Also if you plan on attaching an external USB HDD it won't recognise it as it doesn't support USB cables. It only supports flash disks. But either than that it plays most of my DivX movies and more.
One more thing, check for the model that it supports 5.1 surround out. I made the mistake and didn't check the model. Now I can only use left/right stereo as my model doesn't have 5.1 dolby digital. I paid R630 for mine about 6-7months ago (without the HDD). But for R1199 (R699 demo) with HDD I doubt you will get the 5.1 surround with the machine.
But, if I was you I would get it.
EDIT: Look for the region code hack on google.

Many thankx psyndrome, useful info there and I think given the Makro price drop I may just go for new rather than demo. And I'll look for that hack.

i have a similar one (compared to the pick but with a hdd), and have had no problems thus far, although the cutting-and-editing takes a bit too long for my tastes...

...but about the region code hack, i just unlocked it by inserting a normal region 2 disc, ejecting it, and pressing "0" numerous times and it was unlocked - although i am not sure if this works for all lg recorders

I have a DVD player LG - DR389, i bought a fujitsu siemens Storagebird 35EV821 (640GB) External hard drive, when i attach the usb of the storegebird to the dvd player to watch the movies i saved on it, the dvd player does not recognise the usb of the storagebird at all. Can someone give me advise please

That'll be HiFi Corp for you, no

That'll be Zetti reviving old threads,
Dunno about your USB problem drive, see if it works in your PC and also check specs if your DVD can handle the filesystem (NTFS or FAT32).
