LG DVD recorder RH399H

My RH499H's dvd drive has given up the ghost 3 times in 2 years already. The HDD works fine.

+1 for the LG optical drive failures. I'm on my 5th replacement on my RH1999H (same optical unit as the RH399H) - they don't last long at all, even if you don't use them often. My HDD still works though...and I have 2 spare optical units, just in case...

Samsung or Philips HDD Recorders, if you can find them new. I also have a Samsung (can't remember the model) and it hasn't failed yet.

that LG is a beast....and it records great.but its a huge flop.

its basically the Xbox of dvd recorders :p mine packed up 1 month after the warranty expired.my friend called me yesterday and his drive refuses to open.

Personel opinion :

Stay away from the LG recorders, returned my second one already, just went and bought a Sony , Finish and Klaar

I will have a look around for a Sony or a Samsung. But where do I begin my search?

Marco79, check out http://www.jump.co.za/, after you have found a recorder. Jump gets you the best prices. I would suggest getting a Samsung if you want a good price and if you want it to work for 4 or 5 years. Otherwise get a Sony, they are mostly more pricey, but much more reliable.

Hi Howard,

Think I need advice from you, I have the RH399H, 3 years since I bought it. I now have lots of stuff on the HDD that I do not want lost. Yesterday, I tried writing a dvd, it took much longer than usual, and then the message after finalisation was complete "cannot ply back due to navigation error". It still play dvd's 100%. I contacted the LG approved repair shop. Xecutronixs, thinking of taking it in to them. I always only burn to Verbatim, should I maybe use something else? Or could it be a cleaning issue. My gut feel tells me it is just wear and tear. What if it is the main board or processor? Maybe I shold let them advice me first, and then possible buy another couple of spare units. I do not want to loose the HDD though. Has anyone figures out how to transfer.backup the HDD seamlessly?

Sorry for the question overload, just in need of good advice, which is rare, due to the number of products and specailised nature, I guess..

regards,

Igmar
