All was going so well with my new RH399H DVD recorder after the help from you guys in setting it up. But yesterday I started to experience problems. First the movie that I recorded to HDD from TV, "My Life So Far" had no sound when played back. Then everything that I recorded or played back had no colour. It would seem that colour has disappeared completely from the recorder. (My TV plays fine with colour.) I have gone through all the settings and they all appear to be correct. I have also initialised the HDD but it made no difference. I shut down everything and started again that didn't help either. The only thing I haven't done is to format the HDD but I don't want to lose all the stuff that I have recorded on there. Does anyone have any advice for me? Should I take it back to the store where I bought it?

Think I got myself the same model, is that the one with the hdmi connector and > 300 gig hard drive?

So far mine is recording fine, unfortunatel I don't know about your setting and am way to lazy to search, do you connect to your tv via hdmi and av? Or just one of the two?

Yip, try it via hdmi, just a word of warning, you wont be able to record via hdmi, you should still have your avi connection in to record.

Maybe the connectors are not making the ample contact on avi, this can either be the cabling or the sockets

yeah, try another output, even RF maybe.
I have the 400 GB version. The dvd drive broke twice in a year. I am not fond of LG anymore.

I have checked all the connections and it seems everything is fine. I cannot do an HDMI connection as there is no HDMI input jack on my TV. These problems started the other night when we had a thunderstorm and I disconnected the aerial from the recorder as I always do when there is lightning as I lost a TV that way before. I have double checked the aerial connection and it is fine. I phoned the store and they say it must come back as it is still under guarantee but it won't be repaired until the new year so I will hold onto it till then and watch black and white (unless I find a solution to the problem).

I took mine straight to LG in Cape Town. I didn't see the point in taking it back to Makro, cause they will just send it to LG anyway, increasing the chances that someone may manhandle the thing.

There is a KZN branch for LG :

That's a bit far for me. About an hour and a half's drive so 3 hours drive if we include the return journey. If I had to go to Durban for some other reason it wouldn't be so bad. I bought it at Lucky's Lifestyle at South Coast Mall. When I phoned them about the problem they said the best would be for me to just take it to JTV in 'Tweni where I live but the salesman said I must first phone Jenny at Lucky's head office. She said I can't do it that way because it's under guarantee so it has to first go to her with proof of purchase, then to LG who will then allocate JTV to repair it and it will be sent to them. I wonder what route it will take before it eventually gets back to me. At least I didn't buy it at Game or I would be there standing in a very long queue at the returns counter after Christmas.

I am so happy. I solved the problem with the DVD recorder. The problem was not with the recorder but with the TV. It has a setting for the colour system in the AV mode and "someone" had accidentally pressed the button that changes the setting. I changed it to PAL and now the colour is fine and the movie that I had recorded "My Life So Far" that had no sound has not got sound and colour. Sometimes if I think about a problem for long enough I can get the answer. It only occurred to me this morning to check the settings on the TV. Thanks goodness I didn't return the recorder to the store yesterday. I wouldn't have got it back for weeks and then they would have told me there was nothing wrong with it.
