LG G7 ThinQ to debut on May 2

gsmarena_002.jpg

LG Electronics officially confirmed the LG G7 ThinQ name of its next flagship. In a press release, the company also stated the launch would take place in Seoul and New York on May 3. The ThinQ moniker means the phone will come with AI technology for “more enjoyable entertainment”.

The company introduced the ThinQ brand to its phone lineup through the refreshed LG V30S at MWC 2018. It has enhanced AI modes for scene recognition in its camera, extra voice commands for Google Assistant and pre-installed apps.

The LG G7 ThinQ will come with performance upgrades too. The AI features will also improve interoperability with other devices.

In a press release, Ha Jeong-wook, managing director at LG Electronics, said that smartphones are focusing on filling more and more niches, so the Korean company decided to actually find solutions how a device can be more convenient to the user.

The LG G7 ThinQ will be announced in New York on May 2 and in Seoul on May 3, which, given the 13-hour time difference between the two cities, is likely going to be a simultaneous launch. Earlier today we showed you the official renders of the phone that had its name leaked last week.

More information about the LG G7 ThinQ's cameras and optional notch surfaces

While we've already passed along leaked press renders and rumored specs of the LG G7 ThinQ, tonight we have some more information pertaining to the phone that we would like to let you know about. First, the dual camera setup on back will consist of twin 16MP sensors. One will be a regular RGB camera with a f/1.6 aperture, while the other will be a 107-degree wide-angle lens. As we previously mentioned, AI will help the handset recognize the object in the viewfinder, take into account the available lighting, and automatically adjust the camera settings and make recommendations. LG will also introduce what it calls "SuperPixel." This feature allows adjacent pixels to join together allowing for better photographs to be taken under low-light conditions.

AI will also be used to extend the capabilities of Google Assistant so that users can control more of their LG G7 ThinQ hands-free. And speaking of the notch (actually no one was, but it is the elephant in the room), LG G7 ThinQ users will reportedly be able to make it 'disappear' by blacking out the pixels to the left and right of what many call an eyesore. Last month, we showed you images of what supposedly is the LG G7 ThinQ and some pictures showed the device with a notch, and others didn't. While we don't get bonus points for being prescient, we did write on March 1st, "The screen on the LG G7 seems to have an optional notch setting."

The LG G7 ThinQ will be unveiled in New York on May 2nd. Thanks to the International Date Line (which is NOT a dating app), it will be May 3rd in South Korea when the announcement is made there.

Absolutely nothing original about it, just another flagship to add to the pile, at the same price as all the others i bet.

LG says the G7 ThinQ will have “brightest and most vibrant display” on the market

Whenever the awkwardly-named LG G7 ThinQ goes on sale, it will do so with a display that might make you wince.

According to an LG press release we received via email, its upcoming flagship will feature a 6.1-inch QHD+ (3,120 x 1,440) resolution display with a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. This would make the display the brightest smartphone screen LG has produced until now.

LG claims this makes for “the brightest and most vibrant display on the smartphone market today,” though recent Samsung phones like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 have been found to have more than 1,000 nits. Perhaps LG is referring strictly to LCD screens.

Brightness, however, is only one aspect of a great display, with another being how colors are reproduced. With that in mind, LG said the G7 ThinQ’s display will cover 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space.

DCI-P3 is commonly used for digital movie projection in the U.S. film industry, so we can expect great color accuracy and more displayable colors on the G7 ThinQ.

LG-G7-ThinQ-screen-color-840x477.jpg

How those colors are displayed might differ depending on the environment, since the G7 ThinQ can supposedly analyze how you use it and optimize the display for that activity. To that end, the phone will automatically adapt to six screen color settings: Auto, Eco, Cinema, Sports, Game, and Expert.

If you need finer control, you can scroll each RGB color level option while supported color settings are active. LG did not say which color settings support the granular control, though having more options will make power users happy.

Finally, the G7 ThinQ’s display will have a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and allow for a 50 percent smaller bottom bezel versus the G6’s front panel.

Interestingly, it looks like the G7 ThinQ will have a setting that changes the status bar to black. Also found on the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, the feature lets you hide the notch if the controversial design choice bothers you.

Another interesting point is LG’s decision to use LCD instead of OLED for the G7 ThinQ. The LG V30 and Google Pixel 2 XL feature LG’s OLED panels and were knocked for appearing grainy and having a noticeable blue cast at small angles. Maybe LG wants to take more time to improve its OLED production.

LG will reveal the G7 ThinQ in New York on May 2.

Might consider it over the P20 on my upgrade July

Where do you see an "aux port" or do you mean stereo jack aka headphone jack?

Yes, AUX refers to the stereo jack, mind you AUX is the receiver not delivery.....

LG’s G7 ThinQ will feature a Boombox Speaker that doubles the bass

LG’s next flagship smartphone, the G7 ThinQ, is debuting in just a couple days, and another teaser has been dropped. Speaking with Engadget, LG says that the phone will have a Boombox Speaker that “increases the base sound level by more than 6dB with twice the amount of bass.”

According to LG, the Boombox Speaker will use a resonance chamber within the phone, which supposedly has more than 10 times the resonance space found in traditional smartphones. Additionally, bass can be further amplified by placing the phone on a solid surface, using the resulting surface vibrations to deliver sound.

There’s more audio news with the G7 ThinQ. The phone will come with a Hi-Fi Quad DAC like previous LG models, which allows for things like digital filters and a range of sound presets, but new with the G7 ThinQ is support for DTS:X. An object-based audio codec like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X allows for 3D surround sound and will offer up to 7.1 on the G7 ThinQ (in general the codec supports up to 11.2). This is apparently the first time DTS:X will be available on a smartphone.

LG G7 ThinQ debuts with 6.1" notched screen

LG is finally ready to join the other big-brand players in the 2018 flagship party. The G7 is officially here complete with the company's odd insistence on the awkward "ThinQ" branding.

gsmarena_002.jpg

Starting with the G7's face, perhaps its most prominent new feature is the notch. LG decided to buy into the current trend with its fresh new 6.1-inch 19.5:9 3120 x 1440 pixel display. It's an evolution on the Full Vision panel, now surrounded by even thinner bezels.

While it relies on LCD technology, rather than OLED, LG's fresh new M+ panel uses an RGBW arrangement, with the extra pixel intended to improve contrast and help in delivering a promised maximum brightness of 1000 nits. It is HDR 10 compliant and covered by a Gorilla Glass 5 protective layer.

gsmarena_004.jpg

As for the notch itself, LG insists it's a "new second screen". The company pioneered secondary screens with the V-series back in the day, but has switched its phablets to conventional OLED panels since.

Besides the notch, the LG G7 also features a hardware assistant button - a first for the company. Instead of going down the proprietary road, the Korean giant decided to stick with Google Assistant, effectively making this the first Google Assistant hardware key to appear on a smartphone.

Speaking of hardware, the LG G7 remains true to the double-glass design approach (Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides), with an aluminum frame (notably thinner around the edges than on the LG G6) sandwiched in between. The entire body is IP68 certified and MIL-STD-810G compliant.

The glass back enables wireless charging with the G7 touting both WPC and PMA support. You can also top the sealed-in 3,000 mAh battery, through the Type-C port, at up to Quick Charge 3.0 rates. Qnovo battery tech is on board, to prolong the battery endurance over the years.

Other notable specs on the LG G7 include a Snapdragon 845 chipset, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The latter is expandable via microSD. A flagship chipset also means the a standard connectivity set, including LTE-A, 3-Band carrier aggregation, Cat.16/13 (1Gbps/150Mbps) Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0 and Dual-SIM support in some markets.

gsmarena_005.jpg

In the camera department, the G7 sticks to the tried and true LG formula, with a pair of 16MP snappers - one with a 71-degree field of view, the other, with a super wide 107-degree one. The primary module sits behind an f/1.6 lens and is complete with OIS, phase detection and laser autofocus.

The wide lens uses a dimmer f/1.9 lens, has no OIS and is fixed focus. The camera experience is boosted by LG's AI camera tech, as well as a smart pixel-binning technology for low-light shots. The secondary camera can assist with depth information for more convincing portraits as well. An 8MP, f/1.9, 90-degree camera handles selfies.

LG approached the G7 ThinQ design with its typical emphasis on audio. It rocks a Boom Box stereo speaker setup, complete with DTS-X. The latter can simulate 7.1 surround sound and it's the first time we are seeing it on a smartphone.

As for wired output, not only is the all-important 3.5mm jack intact, it is also connected to a high-end 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC from ESS. For capturing audio, LG has thrown in a pair of microphones, which promise an impressive pickup range of up to 5 meters. The Google Assistant should benefit from the extra range as well.

gsmarena_003.jpg

The LG G7 ThinQ will ship with Oreo , complete with LG's AI Pack 2.0. The company has already committed to releasing the Android P update once Google delivers the final version of its next release.

Color options include: New Platinum Gray, New Aurora Black, New Moroccan Blue and Raspberry Red. Pricing and availability will be revealed at a later point.

Audiophiles dream this phone.

I like the simple design LG uses, liked it in the G6 to, no nonsense, just plain and clean and not trying too hard.

For me it's DOA with that small battery. Would never consider this.

Available from MTN, Telkom and Vodacom from June 2018
