The model is a LH-RH3690SE DVD RW
My mother calls me in a flat panic - the machine has lost it's mind.
She tells me she set the timer to record something on tv & when she played the recording back the recording although the correct length of time recorded different tv channels during that time (a bit of dstv, some sabc1, some etv etc).
I take a look, indeed it recorded as she described.
She then told me she noticed during recording she noticed the channels jumping about on the recorders display window.
It also starts up randomly and jumps about the channels, shuts down and restarts again on it's own doing the same thing.
I tried resetting the machine by holding the power button down for 30seconds and allowing to reset in that manner - this made no difference.
I then tried resetting by disconnecting from power for 15 minutes - to no avail.
Lastly I tried disconnecting from power overnight - no change.
Some googling suggested the problem could be related to a firmware error within the dvd drive itself.
I opened the machine, removed the dvd drive, connected to the laptop and the dvd drive functions normally and identifies the correct firmware version - given that, I did not attempt to flash the dvd writer's firmware.
Other suggestions include possible muck within the power button, or other buttons on the machine itself.
I took a look to find minimal dust, and quite frankly cannot see how muck could get into those tiny switches - although it does make a certain amount of sense that a button sticking could be causing the problem.
Another suggestion by a user was that the hard drive could have gone bad - this also makes a certain amount of sense as it has it's original drive from 2007 and has been in daily use.
(i have a spare new identical drive if the drive needs replacing)
The big issue is the content on the existing drive. (my mother's life is on the bloody thing)
My mother tells me that when the machine started going crazy she could see the recorded content momentarily before the machine shut down on it's own again - so it would appear the data itself.
I have not created an image of the existing drive yet, but will in due course.

At this point I am wondering if I should install the new drive and see if the machine will format / initialize the new drive and start up normally.
The problem could also be related to the firmware of the machine itself as well
