So I saw the special at hificorp R10999.00 inc 7 or 9 sets of glasses, had to go have a look.

Currently the way I feel.
1: Was looking at the ps51d550
2: Not happy about the price of active glasses
3: Have reservations about burn in with plasma. (But i do believe its not as bad in this day and age)

What i experienced
1: The media at the store was 2d -> 3d seemed ok but it was nothing like at the cinema (menu's were however very 3d)
2: Colour seemed a bit washed out, i tried all the presets, did not seem to match up agaist the samsung or sony tv's at default setttings (did not mess with sony/samsung settings)
3: Overall not impressed, maybe proper callibration will help alot, unfortunately I am a novice when it comes to this.
4: 2 d -> 3d seems grainy. not sure if proper 3d content will be better.

Currently Own
1: A UA32B6000

This is a LED backlit lcd panel, was a upgrade as my previous 32" went faullty, it's much brighter and has better colour than my previous LCD Panel which was a 5 series I think, but i feel it could be over bright, (suffers from back light bleed compared to the std 5 series)

I would like to see this LG callibrated porperly, as many reviews say it is pretty decent. but i dont think there are any proper stores with decent veiwing/testing rooms in durban.

Anybody else's thoughts?

I think what you have to ask yourself is, what portion of the TVs time will be spent in 3D. There just isn't enough content out there (Bluray3D, SBS rips/clip off net, streaming e.g. Youtube 3D etc.) to utilize 3D for a substantial portion of time (for me probably more than 50:1 between 2D:3D).

Yes you can keep your TV in 2D->3D conv but as you've experienced, the effect is not that compelling. My view is unless you're a hard core 3D gamer spending lots of time often engaging in lengthly gaming sessions, 3D is not going to play a big part in the TVs usage, so rather choose based on non-3D performance/value for money.

Check out this thread (ignoring the arguments) for some more in depth discussion on LG's passive 3D (vs active 3D), as well as their black level performance. The other aspect I raised was the expense of the LG Cinema 3D TVs when you ignore the 3D functionality e.g. PS51D550 is almost R3K cheaper yet it has Ethernet/DLNA streaming while the LW4500 has no Ethernet port at all.

BTW you should be able to pick up the cheapest Samsung bluetooth glasses for ±R350 if you look around. They aren't rechargeable but the CR2025 (coin like) batteries are pretty cheap & easy to find.

As I mentioned in the other thread, one of the most important settings with that TV is to change the Input Label on your HDMI sources to "PC". Only when you do that does it fully switch off its various ugly filters that add colour banding and make text look awful. Night and day difference, and that's using it both from my PC as output and from a PS3. It also makes it a less laggy TV in the sense that if you have separate audio output (say via Optical Out), without changing that setting you can feel the delay between the sound and the video.

Not recommended for blurays and dvds, as the pc profile removes all the post processing so you end up with a very washed out image. I have a few weeks experience with this on quite a few TV's I tried.

Hmm.
I bought a 42LW6510 last week. I intend to swap it with a 47LW4500 today or tomorrow.
From what I could see in the shop, the image quality wasn't any different between the two (and I thought they were very good), but I've decided that I'd rather have a bigger screen without the SMART gimmicks for the same price. I mean I have a laptop, iPad and a PC - why would I want facebook on my tv as well? My tversity server can stream youtube to my PS3...

Agreed.

2D to 3D convert is a waste of time rather stick to 2D. You can't judge a 3D set based on this.
The LG's default presets aren't very good, it has a wizard for calibration and once done things look much better, don't know how it compares to samsung, sony etc but reviews say it stacks up well.

The grainy part... you were too close to the TV, with passive sets you need to be AT LEAST 2meters from the TV to have a proper effect anything less than that will look grainy and like an old interlaced tv. Also your vertical angle is important with passive sets, you need to be vertically centered with the TV, horizontal angles don't matter much at all.
So in summary you need to be atleast 2m from the TV with your head the same height as the TV otherwise you're not seeing the TV for what it is

i have one of these beauties and they are awesome! I play proper 3D content off blu ray ( ps3), and its tops!! i use the 2D to 3D conversion to watch soccer off supersport HD channel, and it works! LG themselves say the conversion is not fully 3D, but set the depth properly and its good enough for me!
TV is definatelly not grainy, but my default seating is 2M+ from the Tv, and at eye level so that may be why..
I usually switch off the "auto" settings coz that takes all the fun out of setting the TV up yourself! I also toggle between the different true motion settings.. i hate the "soap opera effect", but then again true motion settings can be adjusted accordingly!
Also local dimming is such a great feature! watched transformers 3 last night on blu ray and its was awesome!!

I've realized that the TV does everything you would expect from a 2011 HD LED 3D TV.. and yes you wont use the 3D all the time, but when you do: its like DAMN!!!

The grainy'nes I experienced was in the 2d -> 3d conversion, but as I said I am no expert and I think it needs to be calibrated and tweaked, Is the 2d -> 3d conversion full hd?

Why stick to 2D just because "3D content is not available" There is a lot of 3D content if you are prepared to look. There are a lot of 3D games specially on the PS3. There are quiet a few 3D DVD's available and growing fast. There are 3D content in pictures and videos on the net. 3D is taking off in a big way. Every other future Sony film will be 3D. (MIBIII 3D is on the way). 3D content will explode in volume the coming years. Why neglect that fact. The same was said about BluRay content initially. BluRay were to be gone and dusted by now. Guess what!

I have seen the 2D to 3D conversion myself and it is acceptable. 3D TV engines may even make standard 2D look better.

Yes the LG panels do have a slight disadvantage with the darkest blacks but unfortunately that's not a deal breaker and not the end of the world. PP agreed to that fact. :)

The best is to decide for your self by reading factual technical information on the net and not overly biased home "experience".

Finally the extra "wow" factor of the LG 3D is when you have visitors and all can partake in the experience due to the fact that it uses the cheap cinema glasses and the angles for viewing is great.

Read the following links regards to the latest improvements on resolution for these LG 3D sets with the latest firmware.

The grainy'nes you saw may stem from the older 3D algorithm where the resolution was reduced to cater for the left/right eye information. That was subsequently imprioved with the latest firmware which use 1080i resolution for each eye. Subsequently the LG 3D series received full HD resolution certification in passive 3D mode.

If you are using it with MKVs, just note that it can't play MKVs with DTS in them, even if you're just trying to do passthrough.

Sure, the TV does not have a build in 5.1channel surround sound decoder therefore I use my PS3 for the decoding or PS3 Media server from PC.

I agreed to the fact years ago, however I cannot deny factual technical information on the net, which when presented to you, caused a furore. The model in question, which you so fervently wanted to limit discussion to in an open ended thread/OP, has poor black levels compared to equivalent PVA LCD TVs from Samsung and Sony. Once understanding that contrast is the most important factor in PQ, this could indeed be a deal breaker to many, especially in ideally suited HT rooms that are dim.

"Overly biased home experience" - assumes staying inside couped up like a hermit, without a car, without friends who own other TVs, without venturing to the shops to test. Without an internet connection reading "technical information on the net". Perhaps that is how it is with you.

You fail, and your continued persistence at provoking reactions is further failure.

More like in a few days ago. just before you forced another TV thread to be shut down.

Cry me a river. Again this topic is about a 3D TV where you admitted that you have no knowledge or experience about the technology at all. So just beat it lad.

The PVA panels you swear to unfortunately have many other disadvantages in every other department compared to the LG AH-IPS and Panasononic IPS-A panels apart from the very small difference in black levels. I would prefer to have all the additional advantages of an modern IPS panel over the old S-PVA panel technology you keep on punting to uninformed MyBB members. Just to please you my lord, I will switch on a small back-light while watching TV in my "dark" room to compensate for the very small difference in black levels.

Yes, you did join this forum a few days ago.

Stop forcing threads to be shut down. Stop being an antagonistic, provocative troll.

Without widening goal posts, stick to the discussion and accept what was stated by Roman, myself, televisioninfo, and numerous other technical information websites.

Here he goes again. Just get at it and read about technology.

Lets guess which panel this tv use

LG Infinia 50PZ950 50-Inch 1080p 600Hz Active 3D THX Certified Plasma HDTV with TruBlack Filter and Smart TV Features

Bring your content alive with full 1080p HD 3D technology
THX 3D Display certified ensuring you’re bringing an uncompromised 3D HD experience home
Smart TV allows you to access limitless content, thousands of movies, customizable apps, videos and the best of the web all organized in a simple to use interface
LG’s TruBlack Filter helps block glare while boosting images on the screen to improve picture quality and contrast ratio
Incredibly high contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 delivers incredibly vibrant colors and deeper and darker blacks

It must be an S-PVA panel then.

As for trolling guess who was the cause of this thread to be shut down as well as the Dolby VS PP thread as well as the other TV threads? Which poster was the common denominator in all those closed threads just before they were locked. Makes we wonder. LOL

You won't accept that you instigate others into participating with you. You cannot understand why you receive replies.

No idea why you're posting a plasma in a discussion about LCDs and their panels, not to mention posting dynamic contrast ratio as if it means anything, as well as a statement that makes no scientific measure of these claimed deep dark blacks.

Compare this to making a claim and then posting actual scientific measurements about specific TVs in question, and it's easy for any outsiders to point out who the troll is.

It's sad that we have new members who cannot control themselves deliberately bringing down all threads they participate in.

As I said go check all the locked TV thread's and take note which member the is the common denominator in all the arguments before the threads was shut down.

I see many people posting many opinions. I don't see people going to new threads and unnecessarily posting provocative pieces that previously led to thread locking; and then calling out "troll" in their failure at understanding why they are being replied to. Look at my post count, I spend time helping and debating in the TV forum, among other things. If you dislike that, add me to your ignore list. Your example is indicative of nothing but a straw-man. It is clear you are the one with the problem.
