LG plasmas (vs Samsung?)

Hi guys!

How do you rate the LG plasma TVs, especially versus Samsung?
I'm checking out the site and the LG plasmas seem thinner than the Samsungs?

Not sure if I'm comparing like with like, but Samsung seems to be either 7cm or 3cm (top of the range).
Also, can anyone comment on any potential heat or buzz issues with the above?

well, I actually want to get a LED (I like the sleek look), but everyone's going on about plasmas...so I was wondering if I could have my cake and eat it
I will be using the TV mainly for DSTV (HD decoder; watching mainly sport and movies) and maybe some blu-ray, but I don't want my SD content looking crap (which it apparently does on a LCD/LED). My budget's about R12k-R15k, so I could get a big plasma, or a smaller, middle of the range LED...

I prefer Samsung because they sell more. About 20 - 30 forumites have bought Samsung plasmas specifically in the past 3 months. Although there have been some reported problems of slight jaggering/tearing during panning shots on the PS50C550 you linked to, like what you get a lot of in nature documentaries.

What I will say though, is that once it's mounted on your wall, 1.9cm is honestly not going to make a difference... Unless you're being pedantic.

What I will ask though, is do you really need full HD? Samsung PS50C450 for R7,999 is the best value 50" on the market. You could save a bucket load of cash...

Otherwise, perhaps you could find this Samsung at a good price? Probably over R15,000.

More early to middle 20's for the C7000

You could get a Panasonic HD 50" for around R11k if you can find them. Note that Panasonic have glass screens, Samsung have plastic/perspex type screens (not glass) That's why they are able to get them flatter than the Panasonics.
My 50" mounted on my wall, I can't be bothered about 2-3cm's

Guys you all seem rather well informed. Myself not so much, I have learn't much reading this forum. I am currently not in the market for a "tv". I would love a plasma/LED but then I would want an HD PVR and that would mean +/- R500 for DSTV per month over and above the hardware costs, and if I had the extra cash I would jump right in. I only watch sport on tv and not too much else, therfore currently I invite myself next door, (folks) if I want to watch some sport.

Guys my point is as follows: I have read all the input here and my assumption is that your best bet is a Samsung or else a LG! What happened to Sony, they are just as affordable as the LG and Samsung, yet they never seem to get much of the spot light! Are they really a S****y brand when it comes to Plasmas/LED. I have always been a fan, 3 HiFis one dvd player and a TV.

If you don't have DSTV, then you either have local SD TV, or downloaded media (mostly SD). A win for plasma again.

Yes I have access to local SD TV, however being local, I tend to limit my intake, I am not the local broadcasters biggest fan. If I feel like watching a movie, once or twice a week, I rent and watch a DVD.

On the other hand if I had DSTV and a PVR I would probably spend 75% of my weekend watching sport.

So would a Plasma meet my TV watching needs, and would a LCD be more appropriate for say gamers.

I'll recommend LG then. Happy LG plasma owner here for more than 2 years now. Almost 6 months of research went into buying this plasma. I bought the 42PG60 edge plasma, basically the front of the plasma is just one flat sheet of glass. Beautiful to look at, still makes me smile. My choice was between the Sammy 450 and this LG. And except for the LG looking better, it was lighter, had 3 HDMI's to Sammy's 2, had HDMI v1.3 to the Sammy's 1.2, had a USB input to play music/pics/movies to Sammy's music/pics only, had higher real contrast, HDMI-CEC, none on the Sammy, accepts a 1080p:24 signal. Also no issues in the last 2 years.

DVDs are mostly SD so again, plasma wins. And plasmas are the chosen choice for real home theatre big boys who watch movies, HD, FHD, Blu-ray, etc. because high end plasmas are simply the best for it.

Again, plasma wins at handling sport and fast motion, be it SD or HD sport. You have to spend about double to get a LCD capable of handling motion properly.

Plasma and LCD are both great for games. Plasma wins due to bigger size for less money (better experience), and better motion handling (FPS, racing etc). Also, at the lower end of the market where I'm sure you are looking at buying, plasma's blacks and colours are superior to LCD's.

The Samsung PS42C430/C450 is/are the tried, tested, trusted plasmas, most popular on these forums and best documented. By all means though, check out the LG. Samsung is cheaper though...

HDMI-CEC, is the ability for devices to communicate via HDMI with the same remote. When I switch on my PS3, my TV swicthes on automatically and on switches to the correct input mode. Vice versa as well, when I switch of my TV my PS3 goes off as well. I only have the PS3 currently, but same applies to other compatible devices such as receivers/dvd/blu-ray players etc..
