I am on a bit of a war path with LG.

I have a LG 49UF977 Ultra TV 2015 model with WEBOS 2. I read all the forums on here and it seems that all LG users in SA sit with same problem. Our Smart TV's are have the best User Interface(the reason we bought LG and not Samsung) but the content we are restricted to makes the TV's a glorified monitor. I do not have DSTV and only stream Netflix, Hulu and also use Plex. Now for me to use the apps I have to use third party hardware like a Apple TV to make my "Smart TV", well actually smart... therefore I could have bought a much cheaper monitor because I am not using the user interface of LG at all. I also own a Samsung Blueray soundbar, luckily I have Netflix and Hulu available on my Samsung Smarthub appstore(although the UI sucks in comparison to LG). I have tried ALL methods(including the IR Hack) to access the service menu of this tv with no luck and also a bit afraid that I turn this thing into a brick. I placed a complain about there false advertising on Hello Peter. I got response from Sumaya Bhamjee <[email protected]> and a promise that someone will be in contact, still waiting. Other than that, the apps they do have in the SA store is pathetic and absolutely useless for South Africans. These companies need to catch a wake-up and realise we know what is available and our lifestyles have changed accordingly. I do not like DSTV because of high cost, dated programming and constant repeats. Our internet is good enough to be able to stream content, our TV hardware and software is good enough to stream content but the restrictions placed on us is absurd!!! I suggest you all pop Sumaya a mail, let them know. For now it looks like Samsung TV's will be best if you want a real Smart TV.

Smart TV's are gimmicks... They can play off a flash disk/hdd but that's about it, if you want any of the other "features" get a media box of some sort(beware most of them are **** as well)

Who buys a TV for the interface? Buy a TV for picture quality. Get a media server or other device to provide content. Let each device handle what it is best at.

Howzit, I can't agree with your statement above. I've also got a LG UB950 and I've managed to setup all apps using the region hack. As long as you put in your local region (4955 me thinks), you should be cool. My experience is the complete opposite of yours. There are other threads here and on webosnation where the guys are more than willing to assist.

Buy a media plaer to handle the media, heck even a pentium 3 would work as a media player but it will look ugly.

What does the IR hack do for you? My 2014 LG Tv goes into the service menu instantly when I play the sound file via my cellphone, with the IR LED connected to a jack. Then able to change region code, download apps, then change back to SA region and run Hulu or Netflix.
What does yours do?
Not sure if I have WebOs or WebOS2...and scared to do a firmware update in case I cannot change region code anymore. Maybe that is what changed on yours?

Plex works fine on my Samsung TV, plus, only 1 remote. I can even search stuff using my voice, remote keyboards suck.
Same with youtube, it's just 1 button away.

A Player is cool, but a smart TV is not bad either.

...And if you're buying for picture quality, you'll find that on the higher-tier models. Guess what, those are all smart tvs.

No I could not get into the service mode at all :-( I was not good with the hack thing then.

One remote for me too. :D

And yes, they're smart TVs but they're not bought for their smart capabilities.

Looked around my LG smart's menus once. When I first got it. Don't care about them...

Hi Guys,

Firstly Stokman10 apologies for hijacking your post!

I need some help in deciding what TV to buy as my girlfriend moved out with my old one...

I saw Game and Dion wired currently have these two LG models for what seams to be a decent price.

LG 55UF770T roughly about 15k
LG 49UF770T roughly about 10k

The question I have is, are these two LG's are the way to go for good display quality measured against the samsung's in the same price range?
I don't care to much for the apps and extras offered by LG (which in any case don't seem to work in SA). I have Dstv and a media player to source my content.

For some reason I can't find a lot of reviews on these two products, so if anyone can and share some links that would be great otherwise just some of your own experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Swopped one out within a day for a Samsung. It corrupted a hdd immediately. Decided a so called smart tv is not for me. A Roku and Apple tv connected to a router is far better (and cheaper).

I also looked at the LG and Samsung but ended up with a Hisense 55" and a much less price with Android as it's OS and has Chrome as it's browser.
Although I'm sorry I went for a Smart TV as they draw 30 watts more on an inverter :(
As REAList_1 says, a standard non Smart TV with a Roku or some smart interface is a better way to go.
