LHC Restart

Comments from the nutters
Given all the rumours, conspiracy theory and Aliens from the future causing all these problems, my bet is they'll finally get this thing up and running on 12th December 2012. At which time we'll all no doubt disappear up our own black hole.

$10 Billion????
Oh, I am so glad to see our Euro contributions are not being wasted on minor social projects, like alleviating poverty, helping the starving, giving people somewhere decent to live, giving pensioners better pensions, improving the healthcare, reducing crime, and other necessities.
It just goes to show how much our EuroPoliticians care about the electorate......or those lucky enough to have been offered the chance of voting!!!
WE just have to pay up with no choice.
Life stinks sometimes, dunnit???

Anyone feeling a bit uneasy?

- Chris, Yorkshire, 21/11/2009 14:05

I hate this collider. Why do we need to meddle so much with things without fully knowing the consequences of our actions.

The end result of all this messing will one big bang, good bye earth.

LOL, You have to love the idiots who take pieces of things they heard from a friend and go off on a tangent without know a single thing about what they are really talking about.

As to the first guy's comment, Sorry for him, The LHC is currently up and running already. Claire mentioned something somewhere that +/- 4 million passes were done on Friday night

If all goes well again, there might still be collisions later on today.

Well in all fairness. It was only at the injection energy of of 450GeV. Things should start getting exciting by the end of December when it reaches 1.2 TeV

Yeah... baby steps.

As Kal says the next exciting thing will be when we have ~1.1 TeV per beam, making a center-of-mass collision energy of 2.2 TeV, which will then put the LHC greater than the Tevatron in the US (they're at 1.96 GeV). That should hopefully happen before Christmas.

Then, look out next year for the really high energy collisions, when they ramp up the magnets to give 3.5 TeV per beam! That's when we should get the really interesting stuff happening :)

Eish.. that she is ALOT of power....

Awesome to see the LHC is ramping up nicely...

Though I was told it wont go much more than that soon. They need to do massive amounts of magnet training and things now to get it to the full power (Energy) :D

Same difference .. :p....

I know I was being overly simplistic really.... I'm not a physicist at the end of the day.

This is the bit that scares me silly. They use an OPEN loop control system. The training will consist of running thru' various permutations of magnet settings and grabbing those settings and storing them in a database. This is a 1920's approach.

Nah Chris, just the open loop control is an anachronism.

Last big breakthrough in particle accelerators happened in the mid-50's with the discovery of strong focussing in the cosmotron (Snyder, Courant, Livingstone and Christofilos). Since then it's been incremental improvements. The use of S/C magnets is not unprecedented except on this scale.

Ok.. I am pretty sure those of you who actually tried looking at the one link I showed above with regards to the LHC status website, Sat back and made out a few things, but many confused the crap out of you.

I actually asked Claire the other day exactly what was going, and said I would have to sit down one night and have her explain it to me. She later sent me a mail laughing saying I wasn't the only one.

Anyway, tonight she sent another, again laughing, and saying that it seems everyone is now trying to work out just what is going on there. But this one at least gives some more decent info, so if your showing it to any of your friends, You can pretend, like I do, to now know whats going on:
