Liberals 'decimated' in Egypt vote

Cairo - Egypt's top reformist leader has said the liberal youth behind the country's uprising have been "decimated" in parliamentary elections dominated by Islamists and expressed concern about the rise of hard-line religious elements advocating extremist ideas such as banning women from driving.

Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Prize laureate and possible presidential candidate, said on Sunday he hopes moderate Islamists will rein in the extremists and send a reassuring message to the world that Egypt will not go down an ultraconservative religious path.

"The youth feel let down. They don't feel that any of the revolution's goals have been achieved," ElBaradei told The Associated Press in an interview on the same day electoral authorities announced that Islamist parties captured an overwhelming majority of votes in the first round of elections last week. "They got decimated," he said, adding the youth failed to unify and form "one essential critical mass."

Why the smile? Proud of yourself for spotting irony in the story or does the potential disaster that faces the Egyptians give you a warm and fuzzy feeling?

The irony is that liberals usually create these recipes for disaster and yet scratch their heads in bewilderment when disaster strikes.
 
Yup, the conservatives win again. Conservatives, breaking the world everywhere.
 
I was watching Al Jazeera, and apparently the Muslim Brotherhood are pushing for a more secular government?

Doesn't make sense to me. Why would they do that. It's not what they stand for. Unless they are just doing it as feint or temporary conciliatory manuever?

Those liberals were seen as useful idiots by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Yeah they were big fans of Ayatollah Khomeini . It was the same time they were fawning over the "so damn incorruptible" Robert Mugabe

To suppose that Ayatollah Khomeini is dissembling seems almost beyond belief. His political style is to express his real views defiantly and without apology, regardless of consequences. He has little incentive suddenly to become devious for the sake of American public opinion. Thus the depiction of him as fanatical, reactionary and the bearer of crude prejudices seems certainly and happily false. What is also encouraging is that his entourage of close advisers is uniformly composed of moderate progressive individuals...[T]hey are widely respected in Iran outside religious circles, share a notable record of concern for human rights and seem eager to achieve economic development that results in a modern society oriented on satisfying the whole population's basic needs.

Ayatollah Khomeini said recently, in France, that in any well-governed society "the ruler does not live very differently from the ordinary person." For him, to be religious is to struggle for these political goals, yet the religious leader's role is to inspire politics, not to govern. Hence, it is widely expected that he will soon go to the holy city of Qum, at a remove from the daily exercise of power. There he will serve as a guide or, if necessary, as a critic of the republic.

In looking to the future, Ayatollah Khomeini has spoken of his hopes to show the world what a genuine Islamic government can do on behalf of its people. He has made clear frequently that he scorns what he considers to be the so-called Islamic Governments in Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Pakistan.

Despite the turbulence, many non-religious Iranians talk of this period as "Islam's finest hour." Having created a new model of popular revolution based, for the most part, on non-violent tactics. Iran may yet provide us with a desperately-needed model of humane governance for a third-world country. If this is true, then indeed the exotic Ayatollah may yet convince the world that "politics is the opiate of the people."

The liberals voted for liberal parties, they did not vote for the "moderate" muslim brotherhood and they didnt vote for the conservative party. They voted for the liberal party. Moderates would have voted for the Muslim Brotherhood :rolleyes: So you calling them "useful idiots", when liberals did not support them is a bit doff.

The liberals in Egypt and the world played a part in the uprising but failed to see the Brotherhood waiting patiently in the wings.

And the disaster is caused by conservatives, thus conservatives are the cause of the problem and worse than liberals....
