Licences: GP premier takes action
19/02/2007 15:28
The collapsed Gauteng driver's licence booking system will be working again by the end of the month, Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa said on Monday.
"The MEC for public transport, roads and works has committed himself to removing all obstacles to the smooth functioning of the system before the end of the current financial year," said Shilowa at the opening of the Gauteng legislature.
He said there had been problems with the booking system for the past year.
"While reasons vary, they include a huge increase in the number of people who want to obtain driver's licences resulting in pressure at the GSSC (Gauteng Shared Services Centre), non-co-operation by some municipalities and corruption by some stations collaborating with some of the officials," said Shilowa.
The province will contract with the municipalities to make the centralised booking system through the GSSC mandatory.
It was reported earlier that the booking system had collapsed, so those wanting to obtain driver's licences could not get bookings for the test.
Shilowa said a new system integrating SMS, telephone, internet and walk-in bookings would be set up immediately.
Booking terminals will be installed at all testing centres and a direct online link created between these and the GSSC Call Centre.
