Wondered what life would be like without

1. Cellphones (any form of news/communication)
2. Tv
3. Laptop/computer (no fb, social media)... Etc

Wonder wonder...

I remember 0ver 20 years ago I was out and about all the time, no cellphone, had a pc but hardly touched it. No sms'ing, constant calls.. The occasional mail (post office)...

:-/ weird to think of it, cause I reckon I could occupy myself for a week or so, but beyond that - torturous I think?

Let me have your thoughts, am interested

I'm randomly watching season 1 of Friends and it's funny to see that none of them have cell phones. Hehe.

I could easily live without a phone and TV. Went 2 weeks without a phone/TV in Mauritius and loved it.

I'm programmer so can't live without my PC and laptop, unless I become a handyman or postman.

inefficiency?

Guys
I remember the days before cell phones, google chat and facebook (I'm not that old either!).

I found a few things:
a) socially, we were more organised - when we arranged a party, or dinner, or some event, people tended to be organised in getting there. these days, people don't give respect to time, they just phone or sms to say 'on my way' - i.e. they've left wherever they are to get to a function after its already started.

b) memory wise - i knew everyones phone number - all my friends, family etc. these days, i kind of looked stumped when someone asks me what my wife's cell number is... its a blue icon on the bottom left of my screen that's called 'speed dial' - i don't know what the number is!!

c) do you know how many times i've received an email message that's just been forwarded - no message, no instruction - then you have to read 30 frikkin to-and-fro mails from the bottom up and try to figure out why you're involved.

d) concentration - i've noticed that these days, if you send any written communication that is more than a cell phone screen long, no one will read it... in fact, most people wouldn't even had gotten to point d... we (as a species) are losing the ability to concentrate for a length of time and we're totally reactive now - the phone beeps, we act on that message.

e) reactive vs proactive
i've seen most people in the workplace not plan their days, but rather, react to the email that 'shouts' the loudest, or the person who messages/calls you the most often. we tend to deal with the 'urgent' instead of the 'important' (from Stephen Covey's quadrant in 7 habits) - urgency doesn't necessarily mean important!

having said that, i'm never without an electronic device that's connected. i don't push mail - i prefer pull (so the phone only checks mail when i tell it to), and i don't answer sms's, phone calls or whats app when i'm talking to a live person - and i don't do call waiting. i like to give the person i'm interacting with my 100% attention.

not a lot of that going on though!! i've had people stop a meeting to answer a call and then just have random chitchat.... fail!

i love technology, but i don't think its making us smarter or more efficient - its made us lazy and reactive.

my 2c

It is bloody marvellous !

Grew up with none of the above apart from a telephone with a circular dial.

Cell -When you are away nobody can bug you and if you needed to get in touch with someone there were tickey-boxes everywhere.

No TV / computer - go to the library, read a book, listen to the wireless, actually listen to music, not just have it on in the background.

Tech is useful but lazy and intrusive.

yeah you really make some g...

I think punctuality and time management would be the greatest things lost since the advent of cell phones etc.

Back in the day, if you said you would be somewhere at 8pm, you would make sure your there. You would plan you life accordingly and barring some real unforeseen circumstances, you would make it at 8pm.

These days its too easy for people to call and say i will be late etc.

haha. +1 gaming & +1 to Internet Porn. funny

@ Ecco, I completely agree with you. Technology has given everyone an excuse to manipulate plans.

@ Daveza, I was the same on most levels. But I don't have the financial ease to pack up and go somewhere. Yes, granted it is due to spending on technology (DSTV, Internet, fancy gadgets to make life "easier"). It would be great to step away and switch of everything I own with regards to technology... but (in my opinion) in these economic circumstances, we swallow on a monthly basis what keeps us entertained in our homes, which leaves little to no spend effort left to actually get away. Which in actual fact, kicks us all down. Seeing we crave "peace" once or twice a year, we spend that ability of going somewhere quiet and away from technology - on technology itself ;-) Point is, I would not sacrifice my "entertainment" for a whole year just to get away once or twice a year. Thats just my opinion :) Would you? (ow, and that includes credit holidays... I don't do credit. I have the facility, but refuse to swipe anything under credit. So if there was a holiday planned - it would have to be straight.. but seeing all our money goes towards our monthly entertainment, it's a loose loose situation ;-) )

@Boodah. I agree with most points... besides for concentration. Seeing my calender is planned months in advance. my meeting are scheduled etc etc, it leaves room to concentrate on the bigger picture. Today's world is not what it used to be, where a job was just a job. Today we have to go above and beyond expectations or some other will replace you right away. I work for one of the largest corp blue chips in the world... they pay quite below market related knowing the market is bad with regards to job opportunities. Technology has given me the time & concentration it requires to do what is expected. Otherwise, guaranteed - I and the rest of the "non-technology" adapters (if i can put it that way), would fall behind and most probably be replaced with someone who would make use of it. My lesson, large blue chip - not always the best option - as they tend to look at their staff as replaceable. Yes, given that ANYONE in the world is replaceable - but i know of many employees within small to medium businesses that are much more appreciated within their respective job roles & responsibilities.

I remember a while back people were saying "how can dstv push up their prices.... *angry angry*" "let's all disconnect and make them suffer. Thing is, no one will - as much as we would like it (including myself). We require technology as otherwise - we would be a sore thorn in a population. What's 1 person vs. the world. Or even better 1 person vs. 3.2 mill people in johannesburg.
If you are the only person who opts out of technology, where will your friends/family be? Probably still behind their gadgets. Try get their attention for longer than an hour without checking what their friends latest BBM status updates are (ha ha, just an example)...

Anyways, weird - and a bit of a lose lose battle :)

And to think this is only the infancy of the technological age. Strap yourselves in boys cause we're in for some chop :)
