lightest free VM set-up

Whats the lightest free VM set-up I can run, as I just want to use it for checking usb's ad hard drives for malware.

I don't know about light, but VirtualBox is certainly free - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

I have used virtualbox and vmware. I meant more of a VM and OS combo.

LoL... No... Shame... Would you risk infecting your "detection" system, just to infect the next 10 million drives you plug in there?!

If you want a light operating system that has support for all modern file systems, you can use Ubuntu or Mint. The great thing about that is that the chances if them actually "catching" the virusses you are trying to detect would be minimal. I never had to run antivirus on a linux box (generally with the right care they don't ever get any), but I am sure you can use something from the Ubuntu forums.

The beauty of snapshots https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd560637(v=ws.10).aspx. You don't have to use XP aswell can be 7 or 10. Whatever floats your boat...

So download VirtualBox and use a ISO as a live CD. Check the flash then switch it off..
