Durban had a bad storrm last night. When i heard a loud flash nearby i immediatly pull out the telephone line from the router. Now this morning the cordless phone which goes through the router does not seem to work. I tried pluging it directly into the phone line and it works but theirs a lot of static.I tried another phone on the router and it also does not work. You think my Router phone port is busted.I didnt try the lan ports because i am using wireless atm.If its broken can i claim lighting damage from my Househole Insurance and also i got the router from mweb. Its a billion 7401vgp router.Would you think they will replace it?

Router could probably not connect because there is too much noise on the phone line.

Phone Telkom. Tell them there is lots of noise on the line. And after that try your router again.

had the same issue here in JHB.

Bad lightning storm and the lines wont work, but the internet was working.
Thought maybe the POTS filter was fried so replaced with new one and still nothing.

Phoned telkom and they fixed from the exchange side, apparently the "voice" side was down or fried in the exchange.

The trick is to disconnect it *before* it gets fried. ;)

It would probably boost your insurance premiums & long term be a worse choice. And no MWeb wont give you a new one.

yeah agreed with HavocXphere, next time disconnect the power and phone line from the wall when you hear the storm coming.

How to universities and business combat this, do they have expensive equipment to block out lightning or do they just count it as an unavoidable loss.

 Happened to me twice in Jhb - First time wasn't quick enough unplugging everything - second time was just a freak of nature no thunder just rain all of a sudden and one flash of lightning - if modem damaged by lightning it won't be replaced you have to go and buy a new one.

They run fiber links not copper ADSL, so no issues there. They also disconnect the PCs via isolator when not used further reducing the risk. If a storm occurs while the PCs are in use they just take the risk & insurance pays if PCs get spiked.
