Lightning again!

weird one, lightning struck nearby, modem went funny ...

i had it connected via ethernet to the nvidia ethernet port. i then switched to usb and everything works fine. Also used the other marvel ethernet port and thats fine as well. cant seem to get the nvidia port to work

I re-installed drivers, windows picks up the port and says it is working 100%. When i plug the ethernet cable into the port no green and orange lights come on. why is this nvidia port not working????

btw pc is working fine, no burn smells etc.
Is there some way to like jumo start the port?
 
Your ethernet port is blown.
Buy a new network card.
Consider yourself damn lucky.
I lost 1 80 GB harddrive and 2 ethernet cards this afternoon.
Serves me right - was not using a UPS - had to get this one fixed and kept putting it off.
 
geez, sorry to hear about that hope you insured... guess im unplugging my pc everynight along with the phone line ... really dont think home insurance will cover the cost of my pc ... strange that it stopped by the ethernet port and not gone all the way
 
They wanted 6230 a month to insure my PC's.
For that kind of money I can buy a new machine every month.
I told them to stick their stupid quote <CENSORED> ...

The hard drive went cos the database was in the middle of an intensive database transaction when the lightning hit.

Does not matter - I consider myself lucky.
And - I still love lightning.

I was lucky enough to get everything shut down and unplugged before the lightning got close! Seems that on the UPS front, we also get typical SA service: struck by lightning, saved the compers (7 of them!) and then, in the fine print, it said "No guarantee when struck by lightning" :mad: Isn't that the reason we buy UPS's??? So, now I'm running all 7 without UPS, and just make sure everything is down and unplugged when the wheather turns nasty.
 
Have any of you tried these lightning surge protectors that have a insurance for about R10000 if a computer is fried by lightning?

I'm considering buying one of these but it seems to good to be true.

If you read the fine print they stipulate 'surge protection' direct lightning strikes are not covered - got one on my LCD TV
 
After losing a router, notebook and network card last year, my advice is:
unplug everything the moment lightning appears, if not sooner.
