Lightning fried my PC...need a new one

So I've been meaning to upgrade for a long time but my PC just got annihilated by a monster lightning strike.

I need a new mobo, a deadsilent PSU, 8GB RAM and a new CPU.

Budget is R5000...

My PC just fried a few weeks ago too. Sucks!!

Anyway im picking up my new rig today. Whoohoo! And im definitly investing in a UPS (with built in surge protection). I would recommend you do the same as I know what it feels like to loose your rig due to a stupid lighting strike.

I dont have it yet so cant say whether or not it's any good. But based on the price and what you get for it it seems like a good deal.

If you really need it, rather get 4GB now and 4GB later. DDR2 RAM has gone up to ±R450 per 2GB, up about R100 since 2 months ago. Price should drop after the silly season. R2000 on 8GB RAM is a bit frightening...

If you decide you only need 4GB RAM, then look at a cheap G31/G41-based mobo at R500 - R600 (2 x RAM slots). Gigabyte is good. If you need 8GB (4 x RAM slots) then have a look at G43-based mobo i.e. Asus P5QL-EM. Gxx motherboards have onboard graphics, Pxx motherboards require a graphics card.

Then check out an entry-level quad core for future proofing. Intel Q8200/Q8400.

Cool, Asus P5QL-EM is a good option for Intel, the onboard graphics (X4500) isn't too bad, and it supports HD resolution.

AMD mobos give better value than Intel most of the time. Check out the Asus M4N78 Pro, similarly priced (±R950) to the Asus P5QL-EM and has more features.

AMD CPU wise you could save quite a bit by getting their entry-level quad, the Athlon X4 620 at ±R1100 (although the Intel equivalent (Q8200) would outperform it).

Don't really know much about specifically silent PSUs (maybe speak to LFX). But the Vantecs are great - cheap, good quality, and they have a "silent" 135mm fan which I've only ever heard with my head in the case. I see the Vantec ION2+C 460watt (perfect for your system) has dropped in price to ±R370 - amazing!
